Free Plants & Trees

Submitted by: smrtshppr  06/06/2008 5:59 PM

I discovered a great service that is a win-win. According to the site, "Each year millions of high quality plants go unsold and are destroyed. Thousands of workers with disabilities need jobs. We locate unsold plants, have them packaged by those workers, and the plants are yours free. You pay only for processing packing and shipping." I think it's really cool that you can help people (those who are disabled), save plants and trees that would be destroyed, and save money!!!

Just checked this out and looks like you have to pay $7.95 for shipping per plant!! Outrageous considering I just got three plants from my farmer's market for $10. But looks like it might be a decent deal for shrubs & trees, since a unit consists of 2 trees, so 2 for 7.95 is not that bad. Just feel like it would be better to get the plants locally.

I would put more stock in getting trees and shrubs from the arbor day foundation. For signing up they send you 10 trees free and you still have the benefit of supporting a good cause.

Our local nurseries are pretty expensive so I tried this site and it was absolutely wonderful and way cheaper. I have recommended it to my friends and they love it too.

I checked this site out and those aren't trees, they're twigs! A tree 10 to 18 inches is going to take forever to grow to a noticable size!

WATCH Walmart & Home Depot: they mark trees WAY DOWN like I got a fruitless cherry tree originally $40 or higher for $5 at the end of the season; can get rose bushes for $1; etc; mainly they simply need WATER folks: the roots are FINE; simply take home water well, groom off the "dead" parts, & keep watering them til out of distress & they will take off again & you have saved a bundle! I got 3 small live trees at Grocery Outlet for $2.99 & $3.99; THESE were our Christmas trees! They will now be repotted & stay inside til spring: when I will put out during the warmer days for "hardening"; bringing in at night; then 5/15 will leave outside all the time, come next winter they will survive just fine! YES! (don't be fooled tho & buy a "rosemary tree" for $16.99 when you can pick one up in spring for far less!)

MzScarlett, thanks for this wonderful information; Last year a Home Depot employee told me they threw plants away. She said that they did not give plants away. I will ask management this year.

Why don't they take better care of their plants? I love plants.

I worked at Home Depot for four years. They were told by corporate office to destroy all plants, trees etc. that did not sell. We even had an employee take a couple home to see if he could save them and nurse them back to health. He could'nt understand the waste. His reward....he promptly got fired for "stealing company property".
