Many wedding receptions now have a groom's cake, usually chocolate, with a less formal theme (ours had a couple of hockey players on top!)
I wanted to make a groom's cake for our friends, and didn't have a lot of time. I bought 4 ready-made frozen, 9" square chocolate cakes, a couple of cans of dark fudge frosting, and some chocolate decorations (sprinkles, shavings, etc).
I wrapped a 2 foot square of 2" thick styrofoam with colored plastic -- the kind you wrap gift baskets in -- and wrapped the edge with wired ribbon. I also gathered 4 yards of ribbon to tuck under the edges of the cake. Gather the wired ribbon by pulling on the wire on one edge. I prepared this base the day before.
The morning of the wedding, I centered the four cakes (right out of the freezer -- they thawed by the time the party started in the evening) onto to the covered styrofoam base, and frosted the top completely with the canned frosting. Decorations added to the sides and corners of the top blended the four squares into one large square cake. Once the frosting set a little, I tucked the ruffled ribbon around the base. I added 'bride and groom' bear statues at one side, with more ribbon swirls and bows tucked around them.
The groom's cake was more popular at the wedding reception than the bride's cake, and it took about two hours to put together that morning!
