40 Unusual Uses for Lemons

Submitted by: Ray @ Tip Hero  10/15/2009 12:58 AM

Wow, lemons must be the most versatile fruit on the planet! The brand new website Cluebert features 40 different uses for lemons. They point out in a factoid that:

"The science behind these ingenious household uses of lemon is citric acid: a natural, organic acid that is present in concentrations as high as 8% in some varieties of lemon.

The wonders of citric acid have been known by scholars in Europe since the medieval times. The benefits of lemon and lime juice were recorded in a 13th century manuscript."
Some of the highlighted uses of lemon include:

Toilet bowl cleaner - Make your own toilet bowl cleaner with 1 part lemon juice to 2 parts of borax. You can get rid of toilet rings by applying this solution and letting it sit for a couple of hours before rinsing.

Whiten clothes - To boost your laundry detergent and whiten clothes, add 1 cup of lemon juice into the washer.

Get rid of bad fridge odor- Here's an easy way to get rid of musky or bad refrigerator odor. Soak a sponge with lemon juice, place on a plate, and leave it in the fridge overnight.

Heartburn relief - Drink a glass of water and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice.

when i lived in ecuador it was really popular to use lemon juice for upset stomach of any kind, and also as a fever reducer. i'm not sure how much one should drink--we would juice a lemon and drink it straight. worked pretty well.

"Lemon wipes" are still our preferred handy wipe for trips and outings. Add 1 Tbs lemon juice to a small zip lock baggie, then add several (2-6) folded paper towels. Always ready for sticky faces, catsup drips and finger food smells!

"Tomato fingers", the proof of a hard working gardener, are easily bleached clean with a "lemon wipe", although realy black fingers might require a soaking in juice.

Cats DO NOT like the scent of citrus, especially lemon. Lemon spritz suseptable furniture and woodwork, and most cats will no longer mistake them for scratching posts.

Another microwave trick...place that last slice of unused lemon on a paper towel, zap for 20 seconds, then squeeze the lemon juice on the towel and wipe down the inside and outside of the oven.

The cooking uses are endless...a not to be improved upon pie dough uses lemon juice; most recipes using pastry flour are improved with lemon juice because it softens the gluten bonds and prevents "tough" dough.
