Do You Have a Favorite Home Remedy?

Submitted by: Ray @ Tip Hero  11/05/2009 1:16 AM

A while back Tip Hero reader Susan posted a home remedy on acid reflux. I had been having bouts of acid reflux at the time and tried Susan's approach. Sure enough, it helped. So now I'm wondering if any other Tip Heroes out there have any home remedies to share. Do you have a favorite home remedy? Please share in the comments below.

If you have morning sickness when pregnant ginger, and accupucure wrist bands work GREAT.
If you get really dry, cracked feet don't spend $25 or more on expensive lotions that don't work (I did for years) my dr. said to try Vicks Vapor Rub (or generic version), and also petroleum jelly. Just rub on to cracked heels and put on cotten socks before going to bed. You will be amazed...works better than special foot cremes I paid tons of money for.
And if you have pain from diabetic neuropathy try making a paste from hot peppers (grind in a small food processor) apply to area and wrap with an ace bandage. It may burn the skin at first, but give it a few days...my mom swears by this.

For congestion: Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a cup of hot water (no need to stir), and set the cup a few feet from the patient. I started doing this for my son when he was little, and still use it for myself, decades later. My mom used to rub Vicks VapoRub on my chest when I was a kid (there's eucalyptus in it), which also works, but my version is not as messy.

Apple cider vinegar is great for food poisoning. If you feel like you ate something dated or your starting to feel nausea approaching. Try 1-2 tea spoons of apple cider vinegar in your cupboard
(they make tablets too)I have used this a few times and its awesome. Helps with heartburn too!and many other things.

If you get a topical burn, e.g. from ironing, or curling iron, etc., rub a thin layer of toothpaste on it. It is VERY soothing & cooling, because of the aromatic mint. By no means put anything oily or greasy on it, as this insulates the burn/holds in heat.

For toenail fungus use 1-2 drops of tea tree oil on nail at least once a day. As the nail grows out it will be free of the fungus. You must be faithful in treatment. Tea tree oil can be found in the herbal department at stores like Wal-mart for around $8.00 a bottle.

I also use 1 drop of tea tree oil on my toothbrush when I brush my teeth and I haven't had a cold or the flu in over 3 years!

At the very first sign of a cold or viral illness (in adults down to about 15), take the following: Bilberry 2 capsules 3 times a day, and Echinacea 2 capsules 3 times a day for 1-3 days. In many cases this will abort the viral upper respiratory illness and cut down on the number of times you are placed on an antibiotic, like Zithromax.

I have been using Vicks/generic brand on my toe nail fungus and it seems to be working. My nails look much healthier and one affected nail lifted completely off. It is growing back funny but think it's because the fungus was under the nail for so long.

Apple cider vinegar works to get rid of warts. Soak a small piece of cotton in vinegar and attach to wart with a bandaid. Do this for a couple of hours a day and it will heal. Worked for me and my daughter.

For sinus infection or just nasal congestion try a drop or two of garlic oil with water in a nasal spray bottle. It actually clears up infection better than an antibiotic. Restores the nasal passages.

Upper respitory colds or infection:
1 cup boiling water
1 1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp red pepper (opt.especially if its
for children)
2 tbsp honey
1 cup apple cider vinegar (can use white)
1 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp ginger

Take 2 tbsp. 3 time a day.

I discovered black licorice as a cold preventive and sore throat remedy. Now when I feel sniffles or sore throat coming on I get a bag of black licorice and eat as much as I like - I seem to crave it. The next day my symptoms are gone. Licorice tea seems to help too but not as well as eating the licorice. Must have real licorice in the ingredients...I buy Twizzlers brand.

For wart removal try duck tape. It totally removes planters warts 100%. Our Pediatrician recommended it and it worked on both of our kids that had them on the bottoms of their feet. The warts have never returned either.

A daily gargle or two using warm salt water will ease sore throat pain, clear sinuses, and also helps cure gum disease/ prevent toothaches. Another help for stuffiness is to boil some salt water. Cut off the heat. Then stand with your face over the pot with a bathtowel draped over your head. This also opens up your facial pores and helps keep skin clear.

If you have a cold with a stuffed up nose...hum. Really, give it a try. I read about this a few years ago and it really works. I also swear by a kit I got at Walmart when I was pregnant that uses salt water in the nasel passages to help clear them without meds. And eat radishes to help protect yourself from allergies. Between these three things I haven't had a sinus infection almost 3 years and before that I got them pretty often, and they lasted almost a month each time.

Michelle,

Used your remedy for cracked heels, and I was amazed!! When I took my socks off the next morning, it was as if I had never had cracked heels in my life. This is one remedy I will repeat every night.

For a cold, I give my family a tea I've used for years. Make a cup of hot lemon tea, squeeze in the juice from 1 lemon wedge, a teaspoon of honey, and crumble a whole clove into it. Always makes us feel better!

When my daughter was around 7 years old, both hands were covered with warts about 20. But it was not until i noticed three small ones around her upper lip that she showed me her hands and we saw her doctor. He suggested burning or freezing them of (vary painful and scaring) No way!! I had to find a cure and, found 100 mg.garlic gel tablets .I gave her 100 mg. of garlic 3 times a day .In a month and a half all of them were gone.
I found this cure in Rodale's encyclopedia of Natural home remedies By Mark bricklin written in 1982 Our Family Cure Bible ever since And it's great....

If you have a small skin tag, tie the base of it tightly with dental floss. You may have to repeat, as the tag shrinks. I had one about the size of a pencil eraser and this worked. The blood flow is cut off and it drys up and falls off. I was looking at a few stitches if I had it surgically removed. My nurse practitioner gave me this tip.

For a persistent cough or croup simply rub Vicks (or generic Vicsks) onto the bottom of your feet. Put on socks and you will be amazed at how it controls your coughing and lets you sleep. Weird, but true.

Another tip that works nice, and is inexpensive. To whiten your teeth take 1 tsp. baking soda add a few drops of hydrogen peroxide, make a past and brush...great to get the stains between your teeth. I do this about once or twice a week.

For a stye that has already formed, hold a warm wet washcloth on the stye for 5 minutes several times a day until it is gone. To help prevent styes, wash your eyelashes with no-tears baby shampoo. Rinse well. These tips came from our opthamalogist.

I recently learned that by swallowing a tablespoon of yogurt just before you go to bed, the cultures will help with a sore throat. You must not drink anything afterward because you want the yogurt to actually sit in your throat. Understanding all the good bacterial cultures in yogurt, this is a very common sense remedy.

to marcy, (on styes) when I was a teenager, I had lots of styes. A teenage friend told me they were usually caused by loose eyelashes (I really don't know if I believe this, but..). Pull on your eyelashes in area of soreness, the infected ones will come out. The soreness will go away. It certaintly has worked for me for years now. I realize marcys post was old, but I chimed in anyhow.

When I feel a cold sore coming on, I reach for the lysine tablets. I'll initally take one or two tablets and maybe do that again once more the next day, and then take one a day afterwards for a couple of days. I no longer get huge cold sores any more and when they do come on, they're gone really fast with this tactic.

i take 1000 mg l-lysine daily and do not get them at all!

I used to take l-lysine daily and it did prevented cold sores, but I found I had to increase the dosage every year in order for it be effective. But when it began demanding 3000 mg a day I decided to quit.

Instead, I quit using caffeine and now the breakouts (without l-lysine) are only 3-4 times a year.

To help them dry out faster apply salt water; or eat salted, in-the-shell sunflower seeds.

When I feel a cold sore coming on, I apply an ice cube wrapped in a paper towel to the area (for about a 1 minute at a time). It really slows the progress of the sore so I usually don't need any topical medicine at all!

Apply Hydrogen Peroxide on a cold sore it will stop it. At the first sign of a cold sore, I take a needle and poke the skin and apply the hydrogen peroxide, a few times during the day and it will not be sore, goes away quickly.

For cold sores go to a health food store and buy lavendar oil for around ten dollars for a bottle that last a very long time. At the first sign of a cold sore rub a drop or two on. Do this several times a day. The cold sore will disappear in a day or two. It is unbelieveable.......

For the cold sores, I only take the lysine tabs when I feel a cold sore coming on, not all year round. That's too much work, effort, etc.

Another tip- when I get a cut on my skin and it's not healing or may becoming infected, I reach for the tea tree essential oil. Let a drop or two go on your cut & it helps to prevent an infection from beginning or spreading. I've had good luck with this one.

I saw many comments on using Vick's vaporub, (or generic equivalent, for cracked heels, etc, but didn't see some other things I use it for. It is amazing for chapped or cracked lips. Wet lips with cool water and let it soak in, dry, then apply Vick's before bedtime. All better by morning!
Also works wonders to heal small scratches or cuts.
Another great thing for wounds, helps to heal them almost twice as fast, is to squeeze juice from the aloe plant into the open wound after cleaning it. Also helps on wounds that are already closed, but the MAJOR help is to put the juice in the open wound.

I have gotten these since I was a child periodically throughout the year. Remember that extreme heat and extreme cold will activate the sore. I have recently discovered that Carmex Chapstick really did a great job at keeping the sore moist so it would not split and there is something in the chapstick that keeps the sore from growing any bigger and seems to start healing almost as soon is it comes around.

I can always feel a cold sore befor it pops out, I rub carmex on my lips and that is all it takes.

for cleaning anything in my home I use 1 cup alchol,1 cup white vinegar and 1 cup water with a few drops dawn in a spray bottle, it also kills flies

According to Ohio State University if you are obese and a type 2 diabetic eating 1 2/3 tsp. of safflower oil a day for 16 weeks helped lower fasting blood sugar levels 11 - 19 points, increased muscle, and helped study participants loose 2-4 lbs. I have been doing this for 3 weeks and my fasting blood sugar has gone down about 5 points (gestational diabets). If it helps keep my sugars down so I don't need insulin this time around I'll be happy. Added to a healthy diet this may help some people keep numbers down a bit.

Try olive oil on eczema. If you have a really bad case wrap in plastic wrap.
