The Secret of Markdown Codes at Costco

Submitted by: brickess  06/09/2008 3:22 PM

While I'm not sure how much money you can save with this information, I recently learned that Costco has a numeric system for letting employees know which products are marked down for clearance and which ones will not be re-stocked:

*Items with prices ending in $__._9 are the original price
*Items with prices ending in $__,_7 are reduced for clearance
* Items with an asterisk (" * ") will on the price sign will not be re-stocked.

My understanding after talking to Costco employees is, if it ends in .97 or .00, it is on clearance.

At Costco, the markdown system is this:
ends with .99 is the original price
ends with ._7 is the first markdown
ends with .88 is the second markdown
ends with .00 is the final markdown before it is sent out and sold to a local salvage company.

I noticed your green tomatoes recipe and wanted to tell you about what happened yesterday, I had to cook up some green tomatoes which I did. After eating my fill, there were a lot left and I made up a quick marinara with peppers and onions which also had to be cooked up and made a vegetable "eggplant parmagiana" with green tomatoes instead of eggplant and it was really delicious. Try it in season when you have a bounty of green tomatoes.

In the mail I received the new terms from my credit card. In some of the small print it states that my payment date will change. I am betting that it will be moved to an earlier date without them telling me. So make sure that you read your due date. My payment goes out automatically on my credit unions' free bill pay. So if the due date is changed to an earlier date my payment will be late and they will ding me for $49 (the new late fee which is up from $39). Make sure you watch this one because CC companies are going to make millions on this one.

In the new credit card rules, my card has taken away the grace period. It used to be that I could purchase and then pay in full when the bill arrives and pay no interest. In the small print it says that interest will begin accruing the minute I purchase with my card. The way to get around this would be to pay in advance for what you are going to buy. That way if you are using your cc to get travel points or whatever, you can still earn them but not pay the interest. It's a bit of a hassle but better than paying interest.

Janet--are you serious? That seems crazy. so now you have to pay credit card bills ahead of time? isn't the whole point of a credit card that you don't have to have cash and can pay your bill at the end of the month? will have to read the fine print on my bill b/c if that is the case I might be done with credit cards!

I believe that at Target when a price ends wit a 4 it is the final markdown. If it doesn't sell it goes to Goodwill or a salvage company. Don't wait hoping for an even lower price!

I believe you may be misunderstanding the "grace period" instructions. On some credit cards, if you do not pay in full when the bill comes due (if you carry-over charges), then the interest charges start accruing from the day of purchase. This is ONLY if you do not pay your bill in full by due date.

Thanks to everyone explaining how to know when an item is no longer going to be restocked. I can't count the number of times I can't find items that I've tried and liked and wanted to get more of only to find it gone. I will check every time I am in the store and still it is not there. From now on I will try the item right away and if we really like it, I will go and buy up the whole supply,LOL and then not spend so much time checking everywhere to find something that will never appear again. Thank you for that as that really gets me steamed!!

Yeah, I had that kind of credit card once. It was ridiculous because while my check was in the mail, my account was still accruing interest so of course, then they send me a bill for $1. whatever. And then if I send in that amount there's still interest accruing on THAT. I never used it again.

My son did a little research on marketing for college and this is what he discovered about grocery stores:

On the average items wholesale are half the cost of retail plus a dollar or 10% for handling. This means the stock person and check-out clerks salary is split out of the 10%.

Manufactures put out coupons and Stores put out their ad accordingly at full price or a meager discount. In two to four weeks item goes on clearance for 33% just before coupons expire.

When you use coupons the store receives credit of the coupon plus 8% so they are covering the stores expense for their handling cost. It's more than obvious no one loses anything with a saavy shopper.

During my employment as a P&G sales person, it became apparent that coupons and rebates were usually available at the same time--resulting in significant savings.

Look for both!

This is incredible. You have to carry a list to the store to see if something is first markdown, second, etc? Do all the stores use the same system? How can I get a list of these codes?

I am a single mother of two and the best thing to do now days is abstain from the unnecessary, I only buy what'on sale; sometimes people just buy because they have a coupon even coupons are done to make you spent. Everytime you going to buy something ask yourself "do I really need this? it works for me.

Last year Citibank changed my payment due date to an early one and charged me interest and late fee. I protested and they credited my account. It took two letters to accomplish both credits.

Last month, they did it again! This time charging the late fee and increasing the interest rate to 25%. I protested. They've ignored me. They've lost a 20 year customer.

A happy customer tells a few people. An unhappy customer tells everyone!

One of our local grocery stores has an area by the Curtesy counter. They have marked down items on a table there, we can find dented cans of veggies for 29 cents 32 oz cans of coffee for 2.99 and so on. Check to see if your store has one.

if you have a Kohls charge card - beware. I don't know if it's always been this way, but their billing cycle is every 25 days - not the same date every month - that's how they screw you.

I use my Kohl's card to get a better price on sale items. They have a lot of deals where you save 15, 20 or 30% with the card. If you combine that with a sale item, or better, with a clearance item it's affordable to shop there. (I always figure 15% off & any extra is a bonus).

It helps save money too if you have the cash you are planning on spending in hand so you don't over spend. I do that because Kohl's lets you pay your off your card right there at the check out...Buy an item with card bonus, pay it off immediately. Can't beat that!

Never pass up free items. Your local food bank can ALWAYS use them. Good to check those clearance carts with dented, crushed or just getting rid of items to donate too.

i was just at Costco the other day with my girlfriend and her mom. Her mom pointed this same thing out to us. Very interesting and it helped us find some great deals.
