12 Homemade Sore Throat Remedies (Tipnut)

Submitted by: Kathleen Roberts  01/05/2010 7:04 PM

Not every sore throat requires a trip to the doctor, but over-the-counter remedies can be pretty pricey. Tipnut has put together a list of 12 sore throat remedies that you can make with ingredients that you're likely to already have on hand.

Here are a few examples of some of Tipnut's sore throat remedies:
  • Cayenne Pepper Gargle - Mix an eight teaspoon of cayenne in a half cup of warm water and gargle. Mix it up and use it frequently during the day.

  • Salt Water - This is a common remedy, and it works! Just gargle a mixture of one tablespoon salt and one cup of water every two hours.

  • Honey and Lemon - Mix together one teaspoon of lemon juice and two teaspoons of honey with a cup of boiling water. Cool slightly and drink to soothe sore throat pain.

Most of these remedies contain ingredients that will kill any bacteria in your throat while also soothing inflamed tissue -- all without any potential side effects like over-the-counter remedies may have. These remedies are safe and effective.

Mix 1 tsp of chlorseptic sore throat spray with 1 tsp of pepto bismo and gargle. The pepto bismo will help the chlorseptic cling to your throat. A doctor gave me this advice long ago.
Hold your head as far back as you can so the solution will coat your throat. Make sure to spit out

1.
A small bite of ginger. The warmth soothes the throat.

2. Kashayam.
Boil cayenne pepper, cumin powder, coriander powder and sugar in equal measures (a half teaspoon should do), and drink it slowly. Warms your throat and makes you better as it goes in.

3.
For the dry throat that keeps you awake at night:
A bottle of water by the bed. Take small mouthfulls, and gargle before you swallow. The air bubbles moisten your air pipes, which doesnt happen when you just drink water.

4.
Sleep with more pillows, so that your torso is raised, and you can breathe easily.

5.
Loads of rest n sleep, to cure you sooner.

These tips helped me immensely when I was down with a cold

Received this recipe from a ear, nose, & throat specialist when I had strep throat.
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vinegar(I use white)
1 cup lukewarm water
Gargle 4X per day (do not swallow)
Works great! More relief from this than any couph medicine or cough drops I've ever tried.

If you catch it soon enough, you can eat pineapple for your sore throat. I drain the juice and rinse it off and eat. Tasty remedy.

I learned the easiest one of all. Gargle with warm salt water in the early a.m. and then just sip on cool water all day long. I hated this because it proved my mother right. She had always said that water was the cheapest medicine you could buy.

I learned this from a magazine article where a doctor told you 12 times NOT to go to a doctor. He listed fainting, dizziness, sore throats, etc. He would also tell you "if it's this bad, GO to a doctor."

His reasoning on sore throats was that 90-95% of sore throats are just caused by "dry" throat. I used to get 5-6 major sore throats a year, started losing my voice, and it was taking longer for it to come back. I spent lots of money on doctor visits, medicines, and had lots of pain and annoyance. In the last 15-20 years, following this rule, I have only had 4-5 sore throats total - one was strep and the other 3-4 were sinus drainage and infection. When I feel a sore throat coming on, the sipping begins. I now like water and before I rarely drank it.

Where I mentioned cayenne pepper, it should be black pepper. My apologies.
