How to Save $50-$100 on Haircuts

Submitted by: Tip Hero  05/26/2008 4:30 AM

One way I save money is to trim my own hair in between haircuts. I find that by trimming the hair around my ears and cutting my bangs I am able to increase the time in between haircuts and make fewer trips to the barber shop.

I have a cheap little WAHL hair clipper set which I use to trim the hair around my ears. I saw one of these sets retailing for $20 at Walgreens this weekend. Walgreens often offers a $5 off $20 coupon every couple of months so you could purchase one for $15. This should pay for itself within 3 months. You can also find clippers on ebay for under $20.

Another useful tool helping to increase the time in between barber visits is thinning shears. These shears contain teeth on one of the cutting edges so they only cut half the hair with each snip. These are great for thinning out you hair.

I've seen a few videos online showing you how to cut your own hair. I learned primarily through trial and error. It takes a little while getting used to cutting your hair by looking into a mirror but you start to get the hang of it after a little while.

I've calculated that trimming my own hair in between haircuts keeps me out of the barbers chair for an additional two weeks. So instead of getting my hair cut every 4 weeks I get it cut every 6 weeks. This saves me from paying for 4 additional haircuts per year which at $15 per haircut saves me $60 a year.

I do the same thing. I also have my wife cut my bangs. I've calculated that this little tip saves me over $100 a year!

Not sure if this is true for men, but for women, often salons offer a free bang trim in between haircuts. Great for those of us with bangs!

Well, I hope this doesn't throw anybody into a state of shock and utter disbelief.

As an old guy with very little hair left on top of my head, I decided that a close trimming of my remaining hair at frequent intervals would actually look better than a worn-out professional haircut during that period of time during which my choice of extending the time interval between buying a professional cut had passed.

I perform this, what some might call, "A self mutilating act," using an inexpensive hair trimming device that was made years ago by the Norelco People. It is called the, "Home Barber Shop." It contains several plastic attachments that one can fastened to the primary clipper tool's head, to control the length of hair remaining after this device is moved over one's head.

When I talked about using this device, instead of visiting my barber on a regular basis, I had visions of my wife using this device to neatly trim my hair every week or 10 days. Unfortunately, she did not feel comfortable doing so, so that meant I had to devise a way to do it myself if I intended to put my haircut saving plan into effect.

I found that I could pinch the long hair between two fingers of the hand that was not holding the clippers, while then sliding the clipper head underneath those two fingers and that by repeating this action I would eventually trim all areas desired. I later learned to use a small comb to lift those longer hairs I wanted to remove instead of pinching them as I cut them.

I still use the pinch method to measure those hairs in back of my head that I can not see in the bathroom mirror.

It has now been about 10 years since my last barber visit and once folks got used to seeing me with a short clip over my entire head, it has been accepted as simply another feature of my individual self.

Now, if you will simply take a sharp look at the older guy types while you walk through the stores, or any other public area, you will see me, or others who are doing the same, and never question who we may be using as our favorite barber these days.

While not a gal thing, it certainly is something that most guys can do if they work up enough courage to try it.

In order to save money, I grew my hair out from a high-maintence bob into a long, straight style with long bangs. Whereas the bob required cutting every 4 weeks or so (my hair grows fast), I now require only very-occasional trims. I invested in a pair of "hairdresser scissors" at our local Big Lots and now trim my own bangs in order to extend the life of my professional cuts.

My new hairstyle saves in other ares, too--whereas the bob had to be blown dry and straightened with a straightening iron to look pulled together, I now let my hair air-dry--a savings of time and money. I occasionally roll it on my set of plastic-velcro rollers but also like to put it in a chignon, ponytail, etc, as well--the styling options are limitless.

Some may believe that very-long hair is a bother, but, with my very-thick hair, it's actually MUCH easier than the bob ever was.
