Cheap Veggies & Fruit

Submitted by: anonymous  02/08/2010 5:40 PM

I used to avoid those areas in many supermarkets where they load packaged fruits and veggies at discount because they are not "peak" condition.

At the increasing prices of fruits and veggies and living on a very restricted income since I lost my husband of 56 years, I have found this an incredible bounty!

It allows me to eat nutritionally and almost half-price! And, aside from an occasional blemish, the products are really good. I have made casseroles such as ratatouille, great energizing soups, and desserts from the fruit products which are lip-smacking good. When I serve these "goodies" to my friends they marvel at how delicious the products are!

I urge you to get over any "squeamish" feelings you might have... start small and you will later reap the rewards!

Another Clark Howard devotee!

Anyone who is really appalled about the amount of food wasted in the USA should check out Jonathan Bloom's blog wastedfood.com

There are simple things you can do to combat the waste. For instance, if there is a brown spot, cut it out with a paring knife. If there is mold, toss it.

It's time for common sense to regain a foot hold in our country. Just because something is less than perfect doesn't mean that it's no good. There are plenty of vitamins in those fruits and veggies. Take advantage of them with creative home cooking!
