Membership Deals at Fitness Centers in Cambridge

I wish there was a tool out there where you could actually check out membership rates online instead of having to go through the entire spiel at each gym. There are 10 decent gyms near my house including a YMCA, Boston Sports Club, Fit-Corp, Atlantis, Raquet Club....and on and on. I check out the first four for rates and signed on for a free week at each--so that is one way to get a free month of a gym membership. The BSC was the most expensive and according to a friend who is a member there they raise rates every year--so although I'd start at $74 a month there was no cap on how hight my rates could go. One member said she signed on 3 years ago at $60 and was now paying $72! Although the gym is one of the larger in the area, it is in a basement, so that is a bummer. Usually you can sign up and have the initiation fee waived, so wait to join when those deals are available. The Y is cheaper, but the facilities are not as nice. The fitcorp in kendall is small, but a pretty nice location and a nice gym, rates were definitely less than BSC --about $54/month plus an initiation fee. They do have a deal to lock in your rate if you pay more down at the onset. I settled on the Atlantis--now VIM, as rates were much lower, I paid down $475 at once for initiation fee and for 3 months to get a family rate for my wife and I at a locked in rate of $38. Note that some places are flexible on family plan rates--BSC allowed 2 roommates to join as a "family" since they had the same address. And you should always try to negotiate with the salesman as they want to make a sale as your membership usually comes with a 1 year contract at the least, so try to bargain with them--I got to additional free months out of my bargaining.
