Premium Gas

Submitted by: carols  06/19/2008 7:00 AM

Just read this in the march 2007 issue of Family Circle: Unless you own a high-performance vehicle -such as a porsche, ferrari or lamborghini-premium gas instead of regular gas is a waste of money. As for the belief that pricier octane cleans out your engine, that's a bust too; federal regulatiosn require that all fuels sold in the U.S contain detergents to prevent gunk from building up.

There are a lot of vehicles that require higher octane gasoline, not just high performance cars. You most certainly CAN damage your engine if you use a lower grade. Check your owner's manual for the correct grade.

If the station doesn't have the grade you need, say the only have 87 regular and 92 premium and your car needs 89 octane, you can mix them. Two gallons of 92 plus one of 87 will give you 90.3.

If the manufacturer of a vehicle instructs use of High Octane it must be for a Reason. They don't do it just to make you spend more or make extra profits for gas companies

premium gas often has more detergents to clean the injection system. As far as more power no more power (unless you want to count .0001% more power 10 BTU more than standard gas at 121,000 BTU for standard vs 121,010 BTU vs premium)

However if your car requires premium gas and you use regular your computer will retard timing and you will lose power. (approx 2hp is lost for each degree of timing retarded by the computer)

I have a car that the manufacturer recommends premium gasoline (BMW)but I have used regular from day one. I don't buy no name or off brands; I stick to either Chevron or now Shell with the new additive. I do all my maintenence on time and have owned this car for 6 years and have never had a problem with the engine or with power. There have been times when I needed to move FAST and it responded just fine. Don't know if this would work for your car but that's my 2 cents worth.
