Check for a Fire Hydrant Discount on Homeowners Insurance

Submitted by: anonymous  07/03/2008 7:12 PM

Our home has a fire hydrant on the corner of our property and we were able to recieve a discount on our homeowners insurance because there was a fire hydrant so near to our home. My parents told our neighbor about the discount we recieved and they called their insurance company and were able to get a reduction in their property insurance because our fire hydrant was within a certain distance of their home as well.

Be sure to check if their is a fire hydrant close to your property and calculate the distance. Then when shopping for homeowners insurance be sure to ask whether the insurance company offers discounts for having a fire hydrant near the home.

That is an excellent idea I will try tomorrow! We actually BUILT a fire hydrant on our ranch here in California. It isn't a hydrant, but actually a water pipe (large bore) that the fire department can hook directly up to. We checked with the local volunteer fire department to make sure we did this all the right way, the first time. We also purchased used fire hoses from the volunteer fire department to use on our property that also hooks up to the fire repression unit (hydrant) in the event we are ever hit with a small fire (if it originated here). We also are required to have a 10,000 gallon water storage tank out here in the country, we paid the extra for two. That kind of "insurance" makes us feel a little safer in California's historically worst fire season/year ever.
