How to Make a Cheap Fabric Softener

Submitted by: Kira @ Tip Hero  05/06/2010 3:09 PM

Here's a quick tip from Hillbilly Housewife about how to make a quick and easy fabric softener. Not only will it save you the cost of fabric softener, but she says that it works even better than the store bought stuff.

Here's what you'll need:

  • 3 cups of vinegar

  • 2 cups of cheap hair conditioner (whatever smell you like)

  • 6 cups of water

Take these ingredients and mix them together in an old fabric softener jug. Use as you normally would in your washing machine. You can also use this same mixture to make dryer sheets. Cut up and old t-shirt, pour the softener onto the rag and toss it in the dryer with the wet clothes!

wet the rag 1st; put about a tbsp on it and toss in with the wet clothes; a bottle will last you aprox a year;
using dryer sheets creates a substance on the lint catcher which is the #1 cause of house fires;
you MUST wash them regularly like once every month or so if using regular dryer sheets!
This method does NOT leave the substance on the lint catcher!

One word of caution here. Vinegar and bleach will react to create toxic chlorine gas. So if you're using bleach, don't use this homemade fabric softener!
