Tips on Saving Money on Razor Blades

Submitted by: Tip Hero  07/07/2008 2:43 AM

I'm always looking for ways to save on shaving. I use a Gillette Mach 3 and I was going through a blade every two weeks. With blades going for around $2 it was costing me roughly $50 a year to shave. I've come across a few tips to reduce this cost somewhat.

I Read an article in the Chicago Tribune about a year ago that said the number one reason that razor blades go dull is because of micro rust. They suggested lightly drying the razor blade after each use to reduce the onset of this rust.

Now when I shave I dry the razor after each use. I also tap the side of the razor so the cut hairs fall out and are not stuck in the blades. This does seem to extend the life of each razor blade a bit.

I've heard from others that shaving while in the shower seems to extend the life of their razor blades. This goes against the micro rust theory. My friends state that the warm water and steam soften their beard and does less damage to the blade.

Another strategy I've used in the past is to use an electric razor. The problem I've had with electric razors is they often left uncut hair in certain parts of my face. So I used a cheap disposable razor blade to do touch up work on those areas and got a pretty good shave out of it.

An even better way to save, IMO, is to use an "old fashioned" straight edge shaver. A package of blades is a few dollars, & my hubbie is still on his 1st package. He says it gives a much closer shave too.

I agree. The single razor does just as well with a good cream and does less damage to the skin.

I use cheap hair conditioner for shaving. My son uses it to shave his head and face. A little of this goes a long, long way.

Salvage stained clothes by dying them black. It easy to do in your washing machine.

Also, wash and reuse ziplock bags.

Shave in the shower but take the blade out of the shower, dry it, and store it in the bathroom cupboard. One razor lasted me all summer that way - even with shaving for going to the pool.

Clark Howard from Atlanta, GA has been using the same razor for a year. Every time he shaves, he dries the razor off well with a blow dryer. Make the razor last forever.

There is a tip that goes beyond getting hairs off and then drying your blade. After drying your blade store it in a jar with enough oil to cover the head of the blade. This is the ultimate in length of usage. The razors do not develop any rust ever and they don't become dull. It may take a while to get comfortable with the concept, but realize it can save you up to 90% on buying new blades.
