The Most Affordable Places to Live in America

Submitted by: Tip Hero  07/20/2008 5:54 PM

With a shake-up in the real estate market, you might be able to find great values if you’re in the market for a new home. But if you really want to save money, you might want to check out Money Magazine's list of the most affordable towns in America.

According to their list, "residents who buy real estate in these 25 towns see their incomes go the furthest." Apparently Ohio is a very affordable place to live, as six of the top ten towns are located there.

Money Magazine's "Best Places to Live: Where Homes are Affordable":

1 – Northbrook, Ohio
2 – Blacklick, Ohio
3 – Tonawanda, Ohio
4 - Shiloh, Ohio
5 - West Mifflin, Pennsylvania
6 – North College Hill, Ohio
7 – Maple Heights, Ohio
8 – Kenmore, New York
9 – Penn Hills, Pennsylvania
10 – Brentwood, Pennsylvania

Money Magazine provides more than just a list, as they also provide context for why a given town appears on the list. For example, the number one most affordable town is Northbrook, Ohio. The median family income is $59,902, and the median home price (in 2006) was $83,760.

And if you’re interested in learning where the most expensive towns are located, check out Money Magazine's Pricey Homes list.

Maple Heights, Ohio may be a cheap place to live, but I wouldn't send my kids to school there.

Most affordable places to live don't usually have great job opportunities. I have seen houses down south for half the price we pay in the northeast however, the misleading part is that your salary or job opportunities will be also be half or even less.
