Cheap & Easy Ways to Remove Car Dents

Submitted by: Tip Hero  07/25/2008 2:53 AM

Most people after driving their cars for a while will have accumulated at least one or two dents. Maybe it's from a hail storm or maybe a soccer ball or grocery cart hit your door. Dents are unsightly and they can bring down the resale value of your car. Fortunately there are a few cheap and easy ways to remove simple dents from your car. All these approaches to removing car dents center on the same principle of creating a rapid temperature change at the center of the dent to create a contraction that pops out the dent. Here are a few tactics:

Hair Dryer and Air Duster
In the video below a person heats the surface of the dent with a hair dryer and then rapidly cools the surface by blowing cold C02 on the dent by turning an air duster upside down. You can buy air dusters at most office supply stores for about $5. Afterwards you can use the air duster to clean out your computer's keyboard.

Here's another version where the person uses a bic lighter and tinfoil to heat the surface of the dent:

Using Dry Ice to Remove Dents
Here is another video that shows someone removing car dents with dry ice. They did not heat the surface before applying the dry ice but that may be because the car was already sitting out in the sun. You can buy dry ice at many Baskin & Robins stores. You can also find stores selling dry ice at: www.dryicedirectory.com. Personally I would use the air duster instead of dry ice because dry ice can burn your skin and you need to wear gloves.

I've never tried either of these methods for removing car dents. However, I once used a toilet plunger to remove a small dent from my car. The videos show no damage to the paint job of the cars they were applied to. These tactics seem to work well on simple dents, but for more severe dents you probably would need to visit an auto body repair shop. Seems like some great ways to remove simple dents.

Wow, that's a great tip. I'll have to try out the hair dryer / air duster approach. Thanks!
