All You Wanted to Know About Cloth Diapers

Most parent (and soon-to be parent) Tip Heroes know that cloth diapers are a cheap, frugal alternative to disposable diapers. Most posts we've featured on the topic, however, have just said to switch to cloth diapers and haven't really gone into great, gritty detail. If you're looking for a detailed account of what's it's like to use cloth diapers, how to care for them, how many you need, etc., you should definitely check out this post from Sherry at Young House Love. In her article, she goes into great detail about her adorable daughter Clara and how they make cloth diapers work for them. I highly recommend this article to soon-to-be and new parents!

I just read the cloth diaper post above, and would like to chime from a mom that came from a time when there were no disposable diapers...
There were only two kinds, gauze, and birdseye brands. They came in folded and prefolded. You put them on the baby with a special diaper pin that couldn't come open and hurt the child. You then used little plastic pants to cover the diaper.
We carried diapers with us when we went out, and also carried "empty bread bags" to place soiled diapers in until we got home.
I often feel sorry for the little babies who have never experienced the softness of a cloth diaper next to their little private areas. Paper just seems so rough!
Even if there had been disposable diapers back then I could never have afforded them. We washed, dried, and folded hundreds and hundreds of diapers and never thought anything about it.

After the babies were potty trained, the cloth diapers made the best dust rags that you could have ever found.

For my last child someone gifted me with a couple of months of "diaper service". Does anyone remember Tidy-Didy Diaper service? They picked up the soiled diapers once a week, washed and sanitized them and left you a fresh bundle on your doorstep. All washed and folded. I thought I was in heaven! Ahhhh! The memories!
