How to Get Big Savings on Bread

Submitted by: anonymous  07/29/2008 6:15 PM

[This post is a follow-up to this tip: Save Money on Bread by Shopping at Bakery Outlets.]

Hello. I agree if you live near a bread type outlet, you could save money, but not on your health. Most of these sell mostly refined white flour products which have no health benefits at all. Even when it says whole wheat, it is not 100% stone ground flour.

Anyway, I have found that I can get my bread cheaper by milling my own grain and baking my own bread. You can buy grains through a local co-op in bulk and then mill and bake your bread. You can cut the cost of buying per loaf even more and get the maximum health benefits for your family.

This is a great idea if you really have the time to mill grain and then bake bread. I've found that I can do just as well buying the Great Value (Wal-Mart brand) loaf of 100% Whole Wheat Bread at $1.44 and it really is a "great value" and healty too.

Milling your own grain sounds very time consuming! I buy 100% Whole Grain Bread at my neighborhood Aldi store for .99 (right at a dollar per loaf is an awesome bargain).

I have an Aunt Millie's outlet and on Mondays they have Monday Madness and all bread is 59 cents. I buy the kind with no high fructose corn syrup but they also have organic bread for 89 cents! Then I freeze!

We have a great thrift bread store where we can find all types of healthy organic breads for very cheap. We shop once a month and stock up the freezer. I can even afford my favorite San Francisco sourdough by buying it there.

I'm with the gal who grinds her own grain for homemade bread. I do the same. You won't think that bargain is such a deal after you've been eating for cheap convenience when after a few years your health is broken and you are having to either change your lifestyle or begin using Rx drugs to mask the degenerative disease symptoms.

This is a lifestyle choice and I applaud you for going to the trouble of grinding and baking. Your bread and most likely your lifestyle are very healthy. I take inspiration not offense.
