Save Your Bike Tire Tubes

Submitted by: Steve Behan  08/12/2010 1:55 PM

I ride into Boston to work just about every day I can, and I've had eight flats since March. I'm on my 4th tube and second patch kit.

I did find a plastic strip you line the inside of your tire with, between tire and tube. You can buy it for about 6 or 7 bucks each where ever tubes are sold. But they don't make them or I haven't found ones for my size tire.

So what I was told by one of the guys at my bike shop was take the old tube, rip off the stem, and line the tire with that instead. It sounded like a great idea, and I don't know if it's a fluke, but I haven't had a flat since!

Brilliant! I too live and bike in boston and constantly have a flat tire (does the city reimburse for this? ha). In fact have to take my bike in today to see if I've got a flat or a slow leak. Will definitely have to try this!

Interesting...
My only concern would be that the old "liner" tube might cause the new tube to crease and a rub on itself over time, which would cause it to have a blowout. Same as if you used a tube that was too big.
We see that scenario happen in our specialty tire business.

Brian, Thanks for the comment, but are you talking heavy duty tractor tires? I could see that scenario in a tire that bears a lot of weight and torque. Btw, still haven't had a flat. But I will humbly submit to your "crease and rub" if I get that blowout.
