How to Get in Shape on the Cheap

Submitted by: Tip Hero  08/08/2008 3:21 PM

Paying for gym fees can be well worth the money – that is, if you make it there on a regular basis. But paying a monthly fee only to get in a couple of workouts each month is probably not money well spent. And for some, it’s tough enough just making ends meet each month that a gym membership isn’t in the cards.

We came across an article that provides several ways you can get in shape without hitting the gym. Some of the exercises involve no equipment at all, while others require minimal, inexpensive equipment such as a pull-up bar.

These workouts are not only great because they involve little-to-no expense, but they also can be done in your home or backyard (if you’re already crunched for time, having to trek off somewhere to get in a little strength training might be a deal-breaker).

ZenHabits article states that there are many benefits to bodyweight exercises, such as:

  • No gym fees or need to buy expensive equipment.
  • You can do the workout anywhere, anytime.
  • Most exercises involve many muscles working in coordination, resulting in great overall fitness and strength.
  • For people who are just starting with strength training, bodyweight is often more than enough to begin with. And it gives you a good foundation of strength you can build on later.

We’ll also add that weight lifting, if not done properly, can put unnatural strain on your body that can cause all kinds of problems. With bodyweight exercises (at least based on our own experience), after a proper warm-up, you can push your body hard without as much risk as injury as with weight training.

The article provides links to lots of videos that demonstrate how to do the different exercises. And while some of the videos are shot at a gym (not sure why), you don’t actually need to be at a gym to do these (which is kind of the whole point of the article)!

In Portland we are lucky to have a wonderful place to go hiking called Forest Park. I usually go for one 5-10 mile hike per week. It's great excercise and absolutely free.

I just discovered that my cable offers On Demand exercise classes and they are great. So I purchased a yoga mat and a set of free weights and now just workout at home. I've done a bunch of the yoga and pilates workouts and even tried some of the dance and aerobic classes. They've got Carmen Electra and Bill Banks Jr. And the classes change every few weeks so you can constantly try new workouts.

I use T-Tapp and I work out less than before but it keeps me in great shape. You can watch some videos on Youtube - or try before you buy on the website, or there is a book called "fit and fabulous in 15 minutes" and when you buy it there is a coupon for a percentage off the videos. I also walk and that has helped me lose 6 dress sizes last year.

I have a friend who is a lifetime member to a gym for over 20 years, his family and him pay $8 a month for their gym fees(per person to a really nice gym).
Since we are roomates and he is my BMF of over 10 years I piggy back on his membership, and my fee is $8 per month. The only catch is you must pay it all at once, once per year.....after fees and taxes its like $89 a year. for full year, free childcare, pool, sauna, wieghts, free classes etc etc.once I am a member for at least 10 years I will get that rate whether i piggy back or not, the catch is, pay it all at once and always take advantage when the $89-98 annual cost is offered..slip up once and forget and your back to square one!.never ever pass it up!If they offer you the chance to pay two years in advance at that rate and you can afford it, take it!So if you have a relative, roomate, boyfriend, girlfriend BFF or BMF who is a lifetime member....and its allowed, piggyback on their membership! then in time you get grandfathered in and you get the same outragiously cheap fee they do. but dont expect that as a new bee..won't happen, without piggy backing! you'll pay upwards of $30 or even $100 per month!
the gym I go to charges so much to newbies I can't even tell you what gym it is I belong to.
(which is part of the rules of piggybacking, you have to keep your mouth shut or other members get mad! They tell you that from the beggining.)
you can also do this with warehouse grocery stores like sams and costco, if you live in the same house or use that house as your mailing, permenant address you can. This is great for roomies, and college students! As well as single parents who have a live in partner or live in friend/roomate.
I've never had to ask,my friends always offered,my BMF is also my roomate and workout/shopping buddy,if you have to ask do so with great tact with no expectations. maybe you'll just get lucky!

I love sparkpeople. Helped me immensely in managing my weight. Tracking what I eat and the amount of exercise each day were the key to losing 10lbs. I highly recommend it.
