Extend your Wi-Fi signal for Free

Submitted by:  08/18/2008 7:11 PM

I'm in the process of setting up a wireless network in my home in hopes that I will be able to work from my deck on sunny days. Came across this little video via LifeHacker on how to boost your wi-fi for free by just printing out a parabola template and adding some aluminum foil. It's purported to give you a 9-12 dbi boost and keep you from having to spend $40-$50 on a wi-fi extender.

I made one of these up the day after seeing this and it really works...I mean works great.

The desk top in the rear of my house had a weak signal due to it's location, whereby my laptop used primarily in the other end of the house got the strong signal. Now I can use either location with perfect reception.

It also allowed me to connect the desk top to my new wireless printer that would have been otherwise been unusable. I always thought there was no such thing as a "free lunch", but this destroys that theory.

I made one and it made the reception worse for my laptop! Maybe I did something wrong. My router only has one antenna, not 2 as shown in the video. :-( Darn!

wi-fi is basically wireless internet access. so you can use the internet anywhere within range without being plugged into a modem.
