What do you do with your pens when they run out of ink? Are they useless, or is there the hope of a new life for them?

Firstly, take and remove the internal ink cartridge reservoir from your pen and unscrew the pen nib or point. Now take the hollow pen shell (looks like a thick drinking straw) and insert a flower stem into it. Now put the pen shell with flower stem in a vase of water. Your flowers can still absorb water through the bottom of the pen and this will also prevent your flower stems from breaking in half or bending over. Also, this works great if your flower stems are too short and you need to 'lengthen' them to fit nicely in a vase.

Decorate a picture frame with them by hot gluing them on. Makes a nice gift for a writer, or anyone who uses a lot of pens.

I usually hang onto a few dried up pens for future painting projects. I never seem to be able to find the stir sticks from the hardware store when I need them! I use the pens to stir up smaller cans of paint or varnish. I then throw out the pens when I'm done with the mixing.

I use spent ball point pens to make holes in a pot to insert bulbs, seeds, or even samll plants. You can also areate the soil but be careful not to damage the plants roots.

I search out pretty pens. I take out the ink cartridge and such. Then I cut the barrel into whatever size pieces that I need (1/2" to 2"). I use sandpaper to smooth the edges of the cut pieces. Then I use the pieces as beads for making homemade jewelry, etc.
