What to Buy in January

Submitted by: Tip Hero  12/23/2010 11:40 AM

Can you believe that it's nearly 2011? While many will be taking a deep sigh of relief after all of that holiday shopping is finally done, many troopers out there will undoubtedly be excited about the post-holiday sales. Some stores will be trying to clear out Christmas overstock while others will be offering deep discounts just to generate some traffic into their store during the post-holiday slump. Either way, if you know what to look for, you could score some serious deals if you're willing to venture out to the stores in January.

Carpeting and Flooring

A lot of flooring customers try to get their needs met in time for holiday entertaining. If you wait until January, however, you'll be more likely to score deals and find attentive, eager salespeople who are ready to assist you.

Furniture

Stores need to make room for new models and merchandise that typically arrive in stores in February and March. As a result, you'll find clearance sales in January where you'll find low prices for great furniture.

Digital Cameras

Since the Consumer Electronics Show and Photo Marketing Association convention take place around this time of year, new camera models will start arriving in stores. This means that you'll be able to find deep discounts on great models from last year.

Linens and Bedding

January is the time of "white sales," a marketing strategy devised my John Wannamaker in 1878. Since this strategy has been successful ever since, many retailers still feature a lot of white sales, with discounts of anywhere from 10% to 60% on merchandise. Also, you can find bargains on linens and bedding from the previous season, just like you would with clothing.

Winter Clothing

By now, most people have updated their winter wardrobe and bought the clothes they need for the season. This means that if you've waited this long, you'll save some money since prices have been steadily decreasing on winter clothing the further into the season we get.

Toys

You can easily find toys on clearance after the holidays since Santa has already delivered his haul to the kiddies. If your little ones have winter birthdays coming up, you should be able to find toys that were overstocked for Christmas at clearance prices.

Bicycles

New models of bicycles and outdoor gear tend to come out in February and March, so you should be able to find the older models on the cheap in January while stores try and clear room for the new stuff.

Christmas Decorations/Gift Wrap

Many of you know the trick already. Head to the stores after Christmas to pick up Christmas decorations for the following year. You'll be able to find merchandise at dirt cheap prices while stores try to get rid of holiday items and you'll be prepared a year in advance. How's that for planning?
