MSNBC's 10 Tips for Saving Money on Kids' Sports Gear

Submitted by: Tip Hero  08/21/2008 9:56 PM

With school right around the corner and fall athletics beginning, it's a good time to think about ways to save money on your kids' sports equipment and other costs and fees associated with playing sports.

MSNBC.com is out with an article that provides 10 tips for how to save money on sports-related items. Number one on their list suggests buying used sporting goods. We couldn't agree more. Between kids losing interest in a sport and only using the equipment for a season or two to children out-growing their equipment and/or going for the latest, greatest products, you should be able to find lots of barely used gear in very good shape. The article suggests checking out retail stores such as Play It Again Sports, and also searching online at places like eBay and Craigslist.

And last on the list - look into charities, both in terms of giving to them as well as seeking them out if you're in need of gear. The article notes an organization called Pitch In For Charities that "collects gently used baseball equipment and shares it with teams around the United States and overseas who otherwise might not be able to afford it". Sounds like a great idea and a great cause. Whether you have extra equipment or are in desperate need of it, charitable organizations could be a great place to turn.

A quick rundown of MSNBC.com's 10 tips are below, but we suggest reading the article, as they provide good information around each tip.

1. Buy used equipment
2. Know when not to buy used
3. Sell your own used stuff
4. Get on the right mailing lists
5. Keep your options open
6. Save on team travel costs
7. Have your kid contribute
8. Conduct an honest assessment
9. Know when to say when
10. Seek out charities
