5 New Reader Tips that Can Save You Money (Aug. 26, 2008)

Submitted by: Tip Hero  08/25/2008 10:58 PM

Every now and then, we take a quick spin through TipHero and pick out a few tips submitted by our readers to highlight. We love doing this because, first and foremost, our readers submit really good, informative money-saving tips that we want to showcase so that all of our readers see them and benefit from them. We also like highlighting reader tips because we think it’s a good way to remind everyone that this is a community. We hope you'll share your own tips and knowledge. And remember, no tip is "too small" or "too obvious" or "too insignificant" to submit.

1. Keeping Cool in the Summer

So what tips did we find during a recent tour through TipHero.com? Well, to start off, Midge submitted a couple of great tips a few weeks ago about how to stay cool in the summer while also keeping energy costs down (“COOL-IT”). Midge notes: “Soaking your feet in a pan of cool water is very refreshing and cools off your whole body after half an hour or so.” Awesome tip, Midge. So simple and easy. We tested your tip on a hot day at home recently and found that it really cools you down.

After reading Midge’s tip, the story we read recently about a restaurant in China that has grown in popularity ever since it was flooded (“Diners flock to flooded restaurant”) now makes a bit more sense to us. Perhaps a few restaurants here in the U.S. will intentionally flood their dining areas to cool their customers during those hot summer days. It could make for a great promotional gimmick, if nothing else.

2. Gear and Accessories for Children

christyp submitted a tip about a website she came across called Zwaggle.com (“Swap Kid's Gear at Zwaggle.com”). christyp explains the website: “Zwaggle.com is basically a marketplace for swapping gently used children's items from clothes, to toys, to gear and accessories. No money is exchanged, you simply accrue points for trades made.” Sounds like a great idea and a great money-saving tip to us!

3. Earning Money for a College Fund

TipHero Kelly wrote in to inform the community about Upromise.com, which can help you earn money for a child’s college fund (“Coupons, Club Cards and College”). “Our son ... is four years old now and I have $2,000 of FREE college money just from grocery shopping. If you buy a product that is a UPROMISE contributor you get a percentage of that purchase price put into a college fund.” Thanks for the tip, Kelly!

4 & 5. Pizza and Wine Savings

Finally, TipHero Cheryl recently provided us with two tips that ought to save at least a few fellow TipHeroes some money. Both tips can be found in our popular Food & Dining Out category. Cheryl explains how you can save money on pizza – frozen pizza, that is – by doctoring up a pepperoni pizza with all of your favorite fixings (“Doctored up frozen pizza”). Cheryl explains, “When … pizzas are on sale for under $3 a piece (this week a drug store actually is selling them 2/$5) I buy 4 or 5 of the pepperoni ones to keep in freezer and I doctor them up to ‘supreme’s. I buy small sized canned mushrooms and black olives when they are on sale cheap and stock up, then I buy fresh green peppers and onions when they are on sale if I haven't grown them that year-and cut them into small diced pieces and store in freezer zip bags.”

And how about a little wine to go along with the pizza? Cheryl shares some knowledge about cheap wine (“cheap wine”). Notes Cheryl: “There are cheap brands of wine that come in boxes ranging from $8 to $15 dollars and with oil/gas costs, manufacturers of many things--not just wine--are looking to use lighter materials than bottles to cut back on costs--this INCLUDES higher end wineries--some Italian high end vineyards have recently started doing this. So tip your glass back and toast to the new reputation of boxed wines.”

We really appreciate all of the tips we get from our readers, and we hope that you’ll share some of your own knowledge and advice with the rest of us!

okay the money in the bank is safe, covered by FDIC...up to a certain amount, types etc etc.

I understad all that..but wht's to say that next week, next month, next year..there is no FDIC....

just curious if such a thing could happen...

If the FDIC failed, that would pretty much mean the end of our banking system as we know it in this country. There would be runs on the bank everywhere. I seriously doubt that the federal government would allow that to happen. If they're willing to bailout Wall Street, AIG, and possibly the auto industry (and who knows what else), it seems to me that they would have to support the FDIC. The government can always print more money...

I want to comment on the Upromise tip. I use Upromise also, intending orignially, to use one of their 529 plans, but they didn't support the one I already had. There is a way though, that they don't openly suggest, but that is perfectly acceptable, to use Upromise anyway and when you have a reasonable amount in rewards, I usually wait till I have $100., just ask them to send you a check. You have to request it in writing, but it's not hard, you have to search the site a little to find the address, but it's there. I've done it several times over the years.
