Excellent "How to Buy a Car" Video

Submitted by: Tip Hero  08/27/2008 2:40 AM

Here's a great six minute video that goes over the do's and dont's when buying a car. My father was very good at buying cars and used many of the strategies in this video. If you know someone who has an upcoming car purchase please email them this page.

I now feel like a complete idiot. I spent weeks researching cars. I had 3 cars that I wanted to look at but I ended up seeing only 1. SAD...
Anyways, I'm happy because I got the car that I wanted and at a great price with $0 down, 0% APR for 7 years...only because I wore out the sales person & his group...but in the VERY end, when my husband and I walked in to see the final guy, I flopped and convinced my husband to get the extra insurance.

I regret getting it~

Always have your own financing, and your own insurance. This is the same for a used car. Most used cars have more leeway in the price and you can talk down most dealers by 2-5k a peice. Research rebates online at sites like edmonds.com etc. NEVER NEVER NEVER give your car keys to the dealer. This is a stall tactic by them to keep your keys while they try to pressure you to buy. Research the make and model of car you want and then see online what dealers are selling them for. Also bluebook (google online) the car and see what the dealer paid for it. If you can do all your dealings by fax, over the phone, or by proxy. A good dealership should be able to give you the background history of your car for free (if used). Dont be afraid to stand up and say thanks for your time and walk out. I have bought several cars and love to see the look on the salesman's face when i "one up him". Buy at the end of the month (quotas), end of the year (new cars are out and tax time is coming). If you can't pay for a car in 3 years don't buy it. the interest you will pay is incredible and not worth it. The best value is to buy a car 2-3 years old that still has a warranty you can extend with an aftermarket warranty. Do your homework here as well. the milestones (time limits for increased cost of add on warranty) for warranties usually run around 30k and 60k. If your a woman (no offense) please find a man to bring with you who knows something about cars. Women (as well as men who dont know vehicles) get ripped off by salesmen all the time. Get a reputable mechanic to look at any used car that is out of warranty or isn't a honda or toyota (ha ha). Dont buy ANYTHING FROM THE DEALER THAT ISNT THE CAR: that means, no alarms, no warranties, and not their financing=rip off you can get better elsewhere.
