Submitted by: Tip Hero  02/15/2011 10:57 AM

Denim is an extremely durable material that usually outlasts our use for them as jeans. So what do you do with old jeans that you can't wear anymore? Here are some clever and crafty ideas!

  • Denim Cut-Offs Wine Bag: make a lovely bag with a jean leg bottom and line it with a sturdy fabric.

  • Laptop Bag: using old jeans, a pretty fabric and batting, you can make a sturdy and cute bag for carrying around your computer.

  • Denim Bibs: these are cute treats for baby and they're easy to wash.

  • Recycled Denim Potholder: make these with the back pocket of a pair of old jeans.

  • Small Gadget Tote: shows you how to make a caddy with 3 separate pockets to protect things like iPods and mp3 players.

by cutting all the seams off and then sewing together the large pieces you can then use jeans for larger projects. I have covered chairs and one couch with jeans I have collected that had holes or where un-wearable for some reason.

Most absorbent, easy to wash back door rug ever! Get a piece of heavy fabric (burlap, corduroy, whatever you can get free or cheap and cut it to the size you want the rug. Hem and finish any raw edges. Cut your jeans' legs into strips about 2-3 inches wide and as longas you want. Zig zag stitch them in rows that just barely overlap the whole length of your rug. Then, go back to the strips you sewed on and cut little snips every few inches into the denim. As you wash the rug, edges will gently fray. My family of 6 has been using my rug for over 6 years and it gets washed weekly. Looks great and really sucks up the mud and dirt.

Old jeans make a beautiful quilt. Washed jeans are many shades of blue and cut into 4" squares can be arranged in many traditional quilt patterns or make up your own. With a light bat and cotton back these quilts are very warm.
