A Cheap Alternative to Dry Erase Boards

Submitted by: Tip Hero  04/18/2008 1:09 PM

Magnetic whiteboards are extremely expensive to buy at office supply stores. They are made from something called "porcelain steel" or "porcelain on steel". The steel is what makes these whiteboards magnetic. Magnetic whiteboards often cost 2-3 times what regular non-magnetic whiteboards cost.

As others have pointed out here, you can buy regular non magnetic whiteboards for 1/10th the cost by buying melamine sheets (also known as shower board or tile board) at any major home improvement store for around $10 a sheet.

One way to transform these non-magnetic melamine boards into magnetic whiteboards is to back them with something called rubber steel, or flexiron. This rubbery material typically costs around $3 a square foot. The material is easy to cut and can be quickly attached to your sheet of melamine by applying an adhesive. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

The local supply store laminates paper for only a few cents a page. These work well as small dry erase boards, but are much less expensive. They can be reversible with a ruled-page on one side and a plain or calendar page on the other. Using a standard three-hole punch, the laminated pages can be carried in a notebook easily. The kids use these pages to practice their math, spelling, and vocabulary. One hangs in the kitchen for memos. There are many other uses. This saves on the cost of paper that is used once then recycled.

Another alternative to white boards that I have use are clear protective pages. Just insert the kind of paper you need (plain, lined or both) and you have a "white board." If you need it stiff, add two sheets of paper and place a piece of cardboard between the sheets. These pages fit right into a binder without taking up additional space or weight.
