How To Save When Buying Paint

Submitted by: Robb  09/05/2008 12:26 AM

I've worked in a busy paint store for some years now. If you want to buy paint dirt cheap here's what you can do. Ask where the "mistake" paint is. These are the goof-up cans of paint usually marked down 75 percent or more! Once you find some you like, ask them to shake it and then check the color because if you don't shake it some tint may be hiding at the bottom of the can only to resurface after you get it home and you can't return the "goof" paint.

A good idea is to find like colors and mix them all together at home in a large bucket, this will give you one uniform color. Try to stick with the same sheen...flat, eggshell, semi-gloss etc. and don't mix oils and waters together, or interiors with exteriors. Most shops sell only a few brands so it should be easy to find compatable paints to mix.

Depending on how busy the paint shop is, you can visit regularly and almost always find new goofs sitting out. Also look for cans with big dents in them. If your lucky someone will mark the price down on a damaged can, small dents don't count because they can easily be squeezed back into shape.

Hope this helps...if you find my advice useful you can make a donation large or small at http://www.cyberbeg.com/m.php?id=20478 (The Imaginary Virtual Fake Cyber Toll Bridge)

Thanks
Robb

Also, paint can be found at some local Habitat for Humanity ReStores...and the profit Habitat makes from selling material goes to build Habitat homes.

Home Depot and Lowe's also offer "oops" paint. Have noticed they are selling less than they used to, but I have painted all of our company's apartments with oops paint and have saved a ton--more than 50% markdowd.
