Saving Money with PriceProtectr - Price Protection Monitoring

Submitted by:  09/15/2008 3:57 AM

I wanted to share a tool that should be in every frugal shoppers toolbox. Many stores now offer price protection which guarantees that if a product you purchase should drop in price within a specified period of time after you purchase it, the store will refund you the difference between the new price and the price you paid. If a store doesn’t offer a price protection guarantee you still may be able to return the product and purchase the exact same product at the new price. My parents have used this tactic to save hundreds of dollars over the years.

Getting a Refund if the Price Changes

The challenge is keeping on top of prices for products you have recently purchased. A new site called Price Protectr makes this task much easier. Simply go to Price Protectr enter the webpage of the product whose price you wish to watch. You can specify a price target threshold to be hit for notifying you and the duration of how long you want Price Protectr to watch this product. For example, if you buy a $800 computer from Office Depot, even if you purchased the computer in-store, go to Office Depot’s website, find the webpage for the computer you purchased, enter it into Price Protectr along with your email and they’ll notify you if the price drops. Imagine receiving an email saying the computer you just bought dropped to $600 and you qualify for a $200 refund.

Finding the Best Price

Price Protectr can also be handy for staying on top of prices of products you are looking to purchase. Say you want to purchase a new digital camera. You’ve found the model you want and the current best price, say $200. You can then go to PriceProtectr and enter the product page for that particular model, for each store you wish to monitor, and a price target of $200. Now you will receive an email update if any of these stores lowers their price on the product you’re interested in and beats the $200 best price you previously found.

Price Protectr currently supports 138 stores including Amazon, Apple, Best Buy, Circuit City, Costco, Staples, Sears, Newegg, Zappos and many others. They include price guarantee information and instructions for requesting a refund for each of these stores. To learn more check out PriceProtectr.com
