Saving on Wedding and Engagement Rings - Thinking Outside the Box

Submitted by: anonymous  09/19/2008 12:40 AM

I'm a bit of a freak, but I've never liked diamonds all that much, but I LOVE aquamarines (my birthstone). My hubby (then fiance) thought I was NUTS when I told him I wanted an aquamarine as my engagement ring stone, but he got me what I want, and I love it.

When we chose the wedding band, I chose a wrap style with saphires (traditionally symbolizing fidelity) and small diamonds (my husband's birthstone).

We realize that we may have to replace the aquamarine periodically, but it's what I wanted, and even a lifetime of replaced aquamarine will be of lower cost and greater sentimental value than an "ordinary" diamond.

Wish more people would think like you I've heard horrible stories about diamond mines.

I, too, am an aquamarine freak as well! My parents raised me to be thrifty, and I've always loved used stuff and shopping everything from thrift- to dollar-stores to garage sales. My now-husband and I chose a platinum setting at a used-jewelry/pawn shop; it's from the 1940's, a favorite style-era of mine. He had it set with a large aquamarine (given to me by my grandparents during my teens), which is MY birthstone, too. My wedding ring was formerly my grandmother's--it's platinum and makes a very nice set with my engagement ring. This ring was given to her by my grandfather; she can no longer wear it due to severe rhematoid arthritis but is so happy that it's being cherished and enjoyed. At my wedding the "something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue (the stone)" were all taken care of via my rings!
