CNN Money: "10 Great Deals on Used Crossover SUVs"

Submitted by: Phillip O  09/22/2008 2:12 PM

With gas prices high and possibly going higher again, a lot of friends of mine are interested in getting more fuel eficient cars (or at least the next time they need to buy a car, staying away from the gas guzzlers). I just read an article on CNN about deals on used crossover SUVs: "Prices for late-model crossovers are dropping fast. Kelley Blue Book helped us search out the biggest bargains."

Seems like there are some pretty good deals out there. If you need the room and can't settle for a typical sedan-sized car, you can save a lot of money on these crossovers. And the savings will help a lot with the high gas prices.

One example from the article: a 2005 Toyota Highlander. It gets between 22 and 27 miles per gallon, depending on what type of driving you do. And CNN shows that the price has dropped $3,500 in 6 months. "Last year, Toyota rolled out the newer, bigger Highlander. That's put additional pressure on the prices of used Highlanders, which don't offer the comfortable third-row legroom of the new ones."

Methinks buying a vehicle that barely (if even) gets better gas mileage than a normal car doesn't make a lot of sense. There are alot of cars that get excellent gas mileage, are highly reliable and you save huge dollars by buying one that is 2-3 years old. Case in point, my 6 cylinder Honda Pilot EXL. All the bells and whistles. Gets 18 city/20 highway and has power for days. The honda dealership had a 30k price tag on an 05 (it was 06) and i gave them the big five finger sign (that means drop 5k off the price and we'll start talking). My wife marvels at how "mean" aka thrifty i can be with the salesman but i know have a very clean, low mileage vehicle for the family and i don't have to worry about replaceing an 8000 dollar battery 5 years down the road (and having a vehicle that will be outdate by far more advanced all electric vehicles). save your money, wait for the electric vehicles (see peswiki.com for these technology breakthroughs) to come out. Its gonna be big.
