Speed and changes in speed can have a big impact on the amount of gas you burn. When you accelerate, resist the urge to "gun it" or accelerate quickly. This can burn gas unnecessarily.

When you are cruising on the highway, aside from abiding by the speed limit, keeping your speed down can help save gas. I read that Consumer Reports said that you can increase your miles per gallon significantly by driving slower (I think the example they gave was a test they did driving at 55mph instead of 75mph is 33% more efficient). And when you slow down, instead of using your accelerator until the last possible second and then working the brakes hard, try to slowdown by letting the car coast to slower speeds, as this will also help with fuel efficiency.
