18 Money-Saving Grocery Shopping Tips

Submitted by: VATightwad 09/28/2008 8:14 AM

Shopping is one of the necessary evils. One way I make it more fun is to save as much money as I can doing it. It is a challenge, so if you enjoy challenges, here are some ways to work the system.

1. Use sales flyers and shop for the best bargains. You can plan your menus around the bargains, or use your shopping list. Always use coupons.

2. Shop loss-leaders. These are the items the store loses money on but they draw customers. They are usually placed on the ends of the aisles. Again, you can plan your weekly menu around these items.

3. Shop at Wal-Mart. They will match the prices in the sales flyers and it is one stop shopping. Keep a notebook with prices of items you buy most often to help keep track of bargains and to compare prices.

4. If you shop in bulk, know prices. Just because it is bigger, doesn't mean it is a bargain. And they don't let you use coupons at Sams and Costco.

5. Know which stores use Rainchecks and use them for sales items. If they run out of the item during their sale, they may let you have that same item later when it is in stock.

6. I will repeat it. Use coupons, but use them effectively. Take a calculator with you if needed, but always work out if you are getting a better deal with the coupon or another brand without the coupon. Don't use coupons just because you have them. If it is an item you don't normally use, don't bother with the coupon.

7. If you find refund/rebate coupons, these are also good. You can use them to get free items or free coupons.

8. Use a shopping list and stick to it. Plan a menu and take stock of what items you need. Clean out freezer and refrigerator before you shop so you will have room and see what items you have on hand. You might not need another chicken or package of hamburger.

9. Write a list on an old envelope and keep the coupons that go with it inside the envelope.

10. Don't shop for groceries while you are hungry. You will buy more and most of it will be junk.

11. Shop with a notebook, listing clothing sizes. Carry swatches of color samples and measurements for decorating projects. This would be handy for when you come across unexpected sales or go out to yard sales.

12. When shopping for a large item such as a house or car, take Polaroid's of your options to review at home, when you're not under pressure.

13. When shopping for pre-bagged produce, always weigh and choose the heaviest ones. The weight marked is the minimum weight required, so always try to get the most for your money. If you are buying a head of lettuce or broccoli, for an example, for a set price, weigh to find the largest one.

14. Buy pasta sauce in cans rather than in glass jars. They weigh the same and the cans are cheaper than the glass.

15. Buy bags of frozen vegetables instead of boxes. You will get more for the money.

16. Avoid high prices for small containers of spices and herbs. Buy large containers and share with your friends.

17. Buy large turkeys when the prices are low. Ask the butcher to cut them in half for easier storage and less waste for non-holiday meals.

18. Contact manufacturers with complaints or compliments. You may be rewarded with coupons for free or discounted products.

I did so many rebates one year I put them all in a bank account by them selves and in Dec. I did all my Xmas shopping with them. My friends that poo pooed the rebates could not believe the amount of money I had saved.Alot of the stores keep the rebate slips behind the customer sevice counter.I would go through self check out so I could the products the way I wanted them. When you mail them in the register slip has to be a origiall not a copy.

Not all bagged frozen vegetables or other frozen products are cheaper than the boxed versions, especially if they are different brands. Compare the "unit price" (price per ounce, pound, etc.) If your supermarket confuses you by marking the same types of items with different units, i.e. bottles of olive oil are unit priced in quarts and ounces, then (a) complain to management, and (b) carry a small calculator.

I have been using many of these tips for years. People are amazed that I can feed my family for such a low amount of money each week. I do not subscribe to a lot of pre-made foods. I would rather most of my meals are homemade. I think that my family eats healthier and I save money as well!

I do bulk shopping, I started by cooking for 3 months at a time, Now I am looking to buy for 12 months or longer, after careful calculations I will spend on average between 1-3 dollars a day on meals, depending on how many kids are home for the weekend. My calculations are based on a family of four, buying a side of beef, plenty of staples and items to do homemade meals. I normally spend about $50.00 a month on grocery or eating out. Normally, when I do the major bulk shopping and cooking it saves us a huge amount of money that I can apply towards better things.

I do not agree that you should not buy things you don't use just because you have a coupon. I get plenty of free shampoo and deoderant using coupons. You can then sell at a yard sale for half price or donate to a food pantry. Never turn down anything you can get for free or next to free. If you can't use it some one else can.

Some people used to laugh at me for doing the rebates on some items since I was only getting a few dollars back. They thought it wouldn't amount to anything but it did and I was able to get many useful items that I would not normally buy and try them as well basics like toothbrushes and toothpaste. They stopped laughing at me when they saw what I was able to get.

My number one trick on saving money at the grocery store is: SHOP ALONE! My son and husband are very big into impulse shopping and shopping with their eyes. Leave them at home and save a bundle.

Other tips I wanted to share:

Look for the "Reduced for quick sale" items. The meat dept has the best buys, but remember to freeze or use them as soon soon as you get home.

Put items you're purchasing but that aren't on your shopping list in the "baby seat". It helps you keep a visual on your impulse buys.

No one has mentioned the budget! Pay with cash. It forces you to keep track of what you are spending and make wise choices as you shop. Nothing says STOP like running out of money!

I question the encouragement to shop at Walmart. I have never heard that their policies toward their employees are anything but deceptive and unjust.

I just wanted to point out that canned food is also laced with BPA which has been shown to be an endocrine disruptor. The only way to avoid it in canned food is to buy glass canned food.

Also coupons are usually for highly processed foods laden with HFCS (causes type 2 diabetes) and red food dye (associated with ADD). So keep in mind the bigger nutritional picture when trying to save money shopping.

For those who have to watch their sodium, be careful with the canned items. I find that frozen is my best way to go there when I can't get fresh. They do go on sale and you can stock up the freezer when they do.

I do break down and buy canned tomato products when I can find Salt free ones, even if the price is higher than regular because fresh tomatoes in Winter are awful. I wish I had more freezer space so I could buy in the Summer and cook them down to freeze.

wow to the trac phone comment those are expensive if you actually use the phone. I had a prepaid phone and the trac phone was the most expensive I ended up getting the T-mobile to go, it was a lot cheaper. But the amount I use my phone to keep in touch with family an actual plan is far cheaper then prepay or pay as you go. Just eliminate the extras.

Actually a lot of people have good points. You really have to be carefull with canned foods, at least if you can't get fresh than you can go frozen. It's not always about .50 cents when it comes to your health. Its all about balance. Splurge on some things and sacrafice on other things. I go to p&g saver to get coupons.

Now about the phone, I say emilinate the cell phones and go to Vonage they will give you a great deal, if you call if your having financial diffculties. They will offer you $15 a month for 1 year sometimes. I find this is the easiest way to save money. I once got 6 months free with Verizon and each year, I call and negotiate a better deal than the last.

I read the food ads every week to make sure that I am paying the lowest price - especially for produce. I stock up on items that are not perishable when they are on sale. I make everything from scratch and take my lunch to work.

Tip 3 is a good one. But it works for other stores besides Wal-Mart. Try to do your shopping in stores that match competitors' prices. That way you don't have to drive from store to store. You save time and gas money.

I can't imagine the inconvenice of trying to carry a digital camera AND cell phone with me at the same time.

To the above anonymous poster, they don't make Poloroids any longer, and really, sometimes you just have to make a decision to move into the century we live in now.

Not all of the newer tech gadgets are expensive and out of reach, you just have to know what your needs are and shop accordingly.

My mother in law actually quit her long time job because her employer put computers in!

I feel that the comment "take Polaroids" is only a term indicating -- take a picture, it doesn't matter how you take the picture......

"VATightwad", what a fantastic username! :)

Regarding bulk buying, make sure you take your own household into account. It sounds obvious but a lot of people rely too much on online guides and what works for one person will not work for everyone. I get through eggs like nobody's business, so it makes sense for me to buy them in bulk. And I have the storage space to be able to buy kitchen roll and toilet paper in bulk too. But not everyone has an omelette obession or enough storage space.

What I'm trying to say is that there's no universal set of rules when it comes to bulk buying. Make sure you do your research before you go shooting off to your local cash & carry.

I agree with the the writer it is cheaper to buy can pasta sauce, but this is also not a healthy idea as the pasta sauce in cans are known to have plastic lining in them which can cause cancer, so you are better off paying a little more for the glass jars, but better yet the store brand pasta sauce is just as cheap and just as good as the name brands.

To the commenter that made the statement that T-mobile to go is cheaper well they did not do their homework; it is far cheaper to use prepaid phones and use those no name or unheard of plans and phone companies you'll get a better deal, like net10 for instance, I use that company and it is far cheaper than T-mobile any day and much more reliable.

To save the most money on Groceries you should buy store brands, it really does lower your food bill and you really can't tell the difference with some store brands, also if you wish you can include some name brands, but you really don't have to as the store brands are just as good if not better than name brands, I have been shopping this way for about five years now, and save alot of money more money than I did when using coupons and I enjoy the store brands just as much, in fact I find it hard to go back to the name brands now that I have been buying store brands, I also buy those dollar store and liquidation store brands to save money.

trac fone works great for me. and it keeps getting cheaper. I don't use my phone much. I use the net to talk to family and friends. My trac fone has double minutes for the life of the phone. So if I buy the 120 min card I get 240 mins, which last me about 4 months. and the have bonus mins a lot. So my cell only cost about 5 bucks a month. Can't beat that.
