5 Things to Do With Old Bridesmaids Dresses

Submitted by: Kira @ Tip Hero  05/24/2011 2:18 PM

As much as a bride may say, "you can totally wear this again," that just isn't the case with the majority of bridesmaids dresses. These dresses could potentially be a very anti-frugal purchase if you don't find a way to get more than one use out of them. Luckily, Album Boutique Blog has some cool ideas for you:

  1. Alter Them: there are many ways that you can make a bridesmaids dress wearable again. Try shortening, belting, and/or dyeing them to create a brand new dress. (Editor's note: need some inspiration? Check out Marissa's Challenge if you haven't already.)

  2. Reuse the Fabric: you can easily use fabric from dresses to make great gifts:

[U]se the fabric and any detail from the dress to re cover a photo album and personalize it with pictures of you and the bride. She may not be happy to know you destroyed her dress, but the memories inside, and wedding colors outside, would make a great keepsake.

  3. Donate Them: add to the evening section at your local thrift store so that high schoolers (and parents) will have cheap choices when searching for prom gowns, for example. (Editor's note: you can try out this amazing site called NewlyMaid which lets you send an old bridesmaids dress in exchange for a new little black dress!)

Do you have a great story about transforming a bridesmaids dress into something else? Tell us about it in the comments!

I've used some I find cheap at thrift stores to make curtains and have resized them for my girls when they where little to make dress-up clothes they love that. I also have one that I call my wedding dress and when I am invited to a wedding I pull it out and don't have to find something new to wear.

My sister had a Holly Hobbie bridesmaid's dress, which was probably donated to a thrift shop. I wish she had kept it and had an Ugly Bridemaids' Dress contest like the ones they have for Xmas sweaters.

I heard a good one: a bride had a winter wedding and the bridesmaids dresses were of some kind of heavier red material. (What was she thinking?) One bridesmaid's grandma turned her ugly dress into a Little Red Riding Hood costume for a younger cousin's Halloween outfit. I think she cut it up and sewed the skirt part into a cape with a hood.
