I came across information on About.com about how you can save money on medications: "Drugs, especially brand-name prescription medications, can be very expensive and may strain your budget, especially if you have a chronic illness. Whether or not you have health insurance with drug coverage, there are many ways to save money on your medications."

I do medical transcription for a living, as well as transcribing medical CME courses, so I do have a "heads up" status when it comes to finding out anything new down the pike.

While this tip is certainly not new I actually provided it to the free hospital clinic because so many people were going without their prescriptions because they cannot afford them.

A really good source for generics began as Walmart's $4.00 prescription program, to which Target stores got on the bandwagon with their $4.00 program, and I just noted that Walgreen's has the same type.

There are many, many common prescriptions on these stores' generic listings so do not be ashamed or shy about letting your physician know that you cannot afford the name brand drugs.

ALWAYS talk with your physician and see if generics are right for you - and if so, then look up the store websites and see if your prescription is listed. Many times if you have a co-pay for insurance, the $4.00 program is cheaper, and you should also check to see if the 90-day program is available or not.
