I use Open Office. However there is a learning curve,as it's not "exactly" like MS Office. Not difficult, but something that one should be aware of. There are many free or less expense office suites available. Google is your friend that can help you find them.
Where this will be read by the moderators, it's a good as place as any to mention http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/ A source of free registered software some may find usable. I recommend reading the comments section for the offer of the day, often free at any time alternatives are mentioned.

If you are a college student or know one, many universities (at least in the states) will sell a full copy of Microsoft Office 2007 package to currently enrolled students for as little as $20.00

NOTE TO ALL TIPHEROS to save on Microsoft Office, sign up for the free trial and then wait out the 90 days for them to offer you the greatly discounted price of $69.99!
I signed up for the free Microsoft office 90 day trial from the Microsoft website. After testing the software for a few days, I did the same thing Frank did and bought through amazon.com for $112.99. Then about a month later the microsoft trial site sends me an email saying that my free trial is about to expire and would I like to purchase the software for the sale price of $69.99!!! I wish I had known they would offer this deal before I went ahead and purchased through amazon.

To save hundreds of $, use Linux instead of Windows or Vista on your PC. You can buy a computer from Dell with Linux already on it, or buy a PC with NO operating system, which should be about $100 less than if it had Windows or Vista. Go to Distrowatch.com to download a free and legal version of Linux. Installation is much easier than a Windows install. And you can download a "live" version that you can run as a trial; if you are happy, just click "install."
Most "distros" come with Open Office, which is a powerful office suite and is free and legal. Since Open Office has a version for Microsoft and Mac computers, you can save money even if you already use those. Go to openoffice.org
Don't throw away a slow computer without trying Linux. It runs "leaner" and eliminates viruses that slow you down; and there are versions that will run on older PC's.
