Never Worn Clothing at Garage Sales

Submitted by: anonymous  10/17/2008 12:35 PM

Sometimes there are never worn clothing for $2. Originally outfits can cost $15 or more. Sometimes they just give stuff away, and often times you can pick up gently used shirts and pants for under a $1.

I BUY everything to clothe my family at garage sales. The night before the garage sales, I will "map out" where several garage sales are, and the following morning, I will travel to sales that are located close together - that way I also save on gas. I also give myself a budget..........$20. Once that $20 is gone, it's gone. My daughter is almost two, and I think that I've only bought three items of clothing from a store. Everything else was from a garage sale.

Tara... I love your discipline :) I have a rule too. I drive a dodge caravan and I leave for the sales with the van empty and when it's full- it's full and that's when I'm done :) But i too get everything from sales and sometimes as a special occasion, I might buy off the CLEARANCE RACK :) I just don't get any enjoyment from spending thirty to forty dollars on a shirt when I can find the same thing at a yard sale or thrift shop for a dollar or so. Then I take the $39.00 I saved buying used and pay a bill if i have one that needs paid because being thrifty and all has kept my bills down to the bare minimum and i still eat good food, wear nice clothes and have nice things- all debt free. And no one knows it's not new except me.

I have always dressed my daughter in free or thrift store clothing, and I have been complimented on how nice she looked. (now she is 8 and refuses anything but t-shirts and jeans, oh well, she is saving me a lot of money!)

I am always disappointed in anything that I have bought new as she outgrows it or it gets ruined. I work at a school, and I can tell you that dressing your kids in expensive designer duds does not make an impression. Well, it does, but its not a good one. As long as the kids start the day clean and wearing age appropriate clothing, no one cares what label they are wearing.
