Miami Herald: 10 Ways to Save Money on Pet Care

Submitted by: Phillip O  10/20/2008 9:15 AM

I came across this article on the Miami Herald website and thought it had some good tips for saving money on pet care. I've pasted the first three tips below, along with a link at the bottom to read the full list:

1. "Ask your vet for a written prescription so you can compare drug prices online and at your own pharmacy. Sure, it won't help if you need an animal drug immediately, but it can be a boon to find that a large pharmacy chain will fill your pet's common antibiotic scrip for just $4."

2. "Compare prices for flea and tick products at online pharmacies. Beware, though; counterfeit, diverted and out-of-date products are often sold by less scrupulous sellers (sometimes even the big-box pet stores do this, so check dates and labeling and don't buy them if there's any doubt as to their origin)."

3. "Vaccinate your pets every three years instead of annually. Although pets should receive yearly checkups along with routine blood and stool checks, yearly shots are falling out of favor."

Good Article. Normally, however, out dated products are taken off of the shelf and either put on clearance or returned to the manufacturer. They are not normally kept on the shelf for normal sales. Checking the dates is a good idea.

I too have read recently where getting yearly vaccinations for pets is not necessary. I hope this proves or to be correct.

If you have many pets and are comfortable doing so, be sure to recommend your veterinarian to folks who ask. Because of my multiple pets, and the new clients I bring to the practice, I asked for and got a 20% discount on all services.

Also, never ever buy supplies from your local pet store. Your store probably buys from PetEdge, and you can too. Average markup from PetEdge price: 25-50%

From surfing net I found where vinegar is good to use for flea and ticks... I put 1 Tbs in gallon water (use for pets drinking water)... I also rinse pet with vinegar after showers (not to get into eyes)... In summer if pet starts to itch more often (I go on flea sufari, using q-tip, cotton swab, or makeup pad soaked in vinegar, hold over soaking flea and it's a gone-er)... I usually pick flea off pet and dunk it in the dish of vinegar (just to make sure it doesn't revive and jump back)...

There has been much research on the over vaccination of our pets and also adverse reactions to over vaccinations. The typical rabies shot use to be yearly, now has gone to 3 years and is scheduled to move to 5 years and then 7 years. This is a huge money maker for the vets which is why it is being spaced out over several years because of their loss of income. Many vaccinations many not be necessary based on what part of the country you live in. Do your research, don't just rely on your vet. Put the well being of your pet first!

We have checked online at diffent websites for pet medications because our Vet seems to charge alot more for it than some of the discount stores do. We have found companies online that we use occasionally , that charge much less , one is actually in Australia. We have had NO problems and they are the same meds we can get here, they are cheaper and you don't need a RX from the vet . ( we asked our vet for a RX a few years back, he wouldn't give us one) So we started getting our meds for our dog online and outside the US.

I save lots of money by ordering my flea prevention medications from deadfleaz.com. It is in Australia and have never received an out of date product. It is about half what my vet charges for the same thing and service was great.

I use Diatametrious Earth for any bugs in the yard or on the dog- you can sprinkle the dog with it and it also worms warm blooded animals and kills all creatures with exoskellatons (sp) - my yard is free of all kinds of bugs.
I also use liquid dove in a spray bottle and spray the trees and yard once in a while.
we have been living in this house in So Austin for 3 yrs now, so I called Terminex up and had them come out and check all over. He said I didnt have any bugs to speak of.
I dont have problems with fleas or ticks any more.

Life in Texas is flea and tick feastation heaven. I found a few years ago this tip: Get a box of Tide powder laundry soap,(do not get the fancy smelling or allergen, just basic Tide) pour the Tide into your lawn spreader & begin walking. Apply a thin coat all over the yard, and then add a small sprinkler shower to the yard. I found if the weather here is saying scattered showers with 20 or 30% chance, do just before the showers begin and you get to save on the water bill too. After this, I apply sevin dust or granules (which I do the granules every 3 months, regardless)You can actually apply both products at the same time if choosen. The Tide soap also helps the grass and foliage turn and stay green and beautiful. I have not had fleas or ticks for the 9 years I have been living at this house, and when I moved in we were very infested. After the one time application of the soap reduced the problem by 50%, and this is why I began the granule application. This Tide tip has to be done yearly. Can also apply thru a coffee can with holes punched in to bottom, be careful not to get too big, and save the lid to put on the bottom of can so contents does not get head start and pour out while filling.

Garlic gel caps work great for flea and ticks. Put in pet's food or give whole if they will take it. I found the gel caps work best, as this seeps into the pet's coat and the critters do not like it at all. It does not harm the pet. I have also applied garlic powder to their food and they (or my spoiled one's) eat better.
