Ask About Markdowns for Outdated Meats

Submitted by: anonymous  10/25/2008 11:38 PM

Go to the meat counter and ask the butcher if there is a certain day or time they mark meat and seafood down in the store. You can save sometimes as much as half off your meat costs on these items.

This is just gross and nasty. Why would anyone sacrifice health for cheaper meats? It's not that serious. If it is you just need to give it up altogether.

Actually it's neither gross nor nasty. The meats they mark down are perfectly fine and not old and moldy or detrimental to your health. I have purchased several marked down items and either I use it right away or use my Tila food saver to vacuum pack it and freeze it.

I use discounted meats all the time, I cannot tell you the last time I bought meat that wasn't on the reduced rack. I go early in the day to my local store and have picked up meat that still has 3 to 4 days buy by date on it left for up to 75% off. Never have I had spoiled meat. Just bring home and either cook or freeze and you are fine.

I purchase MARKDOWN meats but I donot purchase OUTDATED meats. There is quite a bit of difference in that statement. If a meat is OUTDATED then to me it should not be sold , but thrown out because the meat would be past its sell date and to me would be no good. On the other hand the MARKDOWN meats that I buy are markdown prices due to the meats getting close to the sell date expiring which means the meat is still good. These dates are usually still 3 or 4 days before the sell date is up on the package and it tells you to cook or feeze before that date. You can save a lot of money buy purchasing this way and it is good meat.

Most stores will not sale OUTDATED meat, there may be laws to prevent that. However meat that will expire within a few days or within a week is acceptable and safe to purchase.

That's the only way I have purchased meats for the past 3 - 4 years! The meats are perfectly fine and we have never gotten sick.

I purchase mark down meats whenever possible. Like Joann and Nora both said there is a big difference between markdown meat and out of date meat. One of my favorite things to do is to go to stores with deli's after noon on Sundays and get their reduced roasted chickens. I pop them in the freezer and when I need a quick meal I just thaw it out in the fridge. It make great chicken salad also.

I've purchased marked down meat, poultry and dairy products since 1981. Look closely at the package date and it's often two or more days out. I either prepare the meat that night or freeze it. I'm looking forward to the day after Thanksgiving for frozen turkey breasts at a deep discount. (Same after Christmas, especially for ham.)

Markdown meat..no problem. Markdown seafood..forget it. I bought shrimp that was "manager's special" and it smelled like ammonia when we cooked it. It went out with the trash and I vowed never to get marked down seafood again.

I have been in the meat business for over 30 years-I now work in a supermarket meat department. It is our policy to mark down fresh meat the day before it goes out of date-what doesn't sell gets thrown away. About 70% of what gets thrown away is still ok to consume.

After meat is cut and exposed to oxygen it turns bright red(in the case of beef)-then it will start to turn brown. This brown color is normal and is due to longer exposure to oxygen.
If the marked down meat is eaten right away-or frozen-there is no health problem.

Meat will also change color due to the lights used in the meat case.
We also mark down processed meats(hotdogs, sausage, bacon)about a week before it's expiration date. The biggest factors which determine how long meat will hold up are the temperature it is stored at and the degree of sanitation of the store.
I purchase most of my meat from the marked down product and have never had a problem. I have received phones calls from customers-"I bought meat on such and such a day-is it still good?"
I have no way of knowing-how long was it in your car-how cold is your refrigerator-if it looks good and smells good-then it is probably OK.
