How to Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets

Submitted by: Tip Hero  09/01/2011 2:48 PM

One very budget-friendly way to update your kitchen is to invest in new cabinets. Cabinets, however, can be super expensive and may not be in your budget just now. That doesn't mean that you can't create the same impressive effect of new cabinets for a whole lot cheaper.

Check out some tips from Kate, a DIY home remodeling genius from Centsational Girl:

  1. Start by cleaning your cabinets and sanding them. Kate also suggests lightly sanding between paint coats to ultimately prevent the appearance of brush strokes.

  2. Use an oil-based primer since it has bonding agents and will dry to a hard finish.

  3. After the primer dries and you've sanded away any brush strokes, apply 2 coats of an oil-based paint. Though latex paint dries quicker, an oil-based paint will be more durable over time.

And here's another method for painting your cabinets so that they look like new:

i have now painted 2 sets of kitchen cabinets over the years. i did the oil based the first time around and it was smelly and hard to clean up. 2 years ago i did our cabinets in the house we are now in. i cleaned, sanded and started with a kilz primer to start. i found that this eliminated any stains coming thru, and i used the water based version. i lightly sanded again and used a very good kitchen/bath enamel for the cabinets. and yes, 2 coats. also, use a GOOD brush, it makes all the difference hiding brush strokes. they have been painted 2 years and have held up beautifully.
the paint washes off nicely and we have had barely any nics along the way. also, we had ok cabinet hardware, rather than replace all the hinges and knobs, i spray painted them and then sprayed them with polyurethane so that the paint didnt wear off. again, 2 years and everything looks great!! i will say this,to do it right, it is not a "weekend job" the whole process took me about 1.5 weeks with drying time, but its worth it, the kitchen looks updated and we spent a total of $85 on the entire thing!!
