Buy Eco-Friendly Mattresses at IKEA for $379 or Less

Amongst growing concern about the toxicity of PBDEs (a chemical flame retardent commonly found in furniture foam, mattresses, and upholstery that has been linked to liver toxicity, thyroid toxicity, and neurodevelopmental toxicity), I decided that I did not want to spend my resting hours on a mattress that contains chemical compounds.

I also did not want to spend upwards to $5000 on an organic PBDE free mattress, so I did some investigating and found out that the european manufacturer, IKEA, sells PBDE free mattresses for $379!! Europe has banned the use of PBDEs in mattresses since 2004. Which begs the question why is the US so far behind on this?

This from IKEA:

"IKEA International made a voluntary decision to abstain from the use of brominated flame retardants and antimony-compounds in 1998. The phase-out of these chemicals was completed in 2002. Today, all textiles, mattresses and upholstered furniture sold by IKEA stores world-wide are free of PBDE and antimony compounds. Only mattresses sold in countries where there is strict fire legislation, at this time, the United States and the United Kingdom, have been treated with organic phosphor or nitrogen-based flame retardants."
