Submitted by: Tip Hero  09/16/2011 10:59 AM

Stuck in a hotel that doesn't offer free breakfast in the mornings? Not to worry. You can still have a home-cooked, hot breakfast in your hotel room with the help of a simple coffee maker and an iron. Check out this video featuring Natalie Tran of LonelyPlanet that shows you how to do it:

I absolutely LOVE her ingenuity!! Once on vacation in a motel that did have a kitchenette, but very limited utensils, I had cooked pancakes, but when I went to turn/lift them, realized I had nothing that remotely resembled a spatula. I had to get way creative in a hurry, so I folded an aluminum pie plate in half to fashion something flat to flip them with. It wasn't the greatest success, but certainly worked in a major pinch! :-)

Get some slices of cheese and a couple of slices of bread. Put cheese between bread and sandwich between parchment paper and iron. Makes a great grilled cheese. Add some ham from one of those single server cans with the pop top and have a ham and cheese, grilled.
You can heat up soup in those hot pots that heat water. You can boil six eggs in one of those. Just add the eggs, cover with water and in minutes you have soft eggs. Let sit for a while in the hot water and you have hard boiled.
Grilled ham and cheese sandwich with boiled egg and a cup of soup. Good enough Dinner or Breakfast for anyone. Add an apple to you pocketbook and you are good to go.

This has got to be the most incredibly stupid idea ever! I really want to eat half-raw bacon and eggs. Did you see that bacon? It was barely warmed up, not cooked! Has she not heard of salmonella from eating raw eggs? Not to mention, the potential for grease spillage--no matter how carefully one wraps! This could potentially ruin someone's valuable clothing and someone's day. How would you like to be getting ready for a wedding, iron your dress and find a huge grease stain on it with barely enough time to get to the event?

I have to agree with Claudia on this one.
The potential for damage is enormous. Why risk that?

Part of the fun of traveling, for me, is eating out. If you're springing for a hotel somewhere,
then save a few extra dollars ahead of time. Breakfast is not that expensive, especially at a fast food place. If you can't find one, then buy a muffin, bagels or granola bars from a gas station or 7-11.

Save your cooking for home~
