Bake Your Own Bread and Baked goods

Submitted by: tashile  11/12/2008 11:54 AM

The best way to save money with bread and baked goods is to make all of them yourself. Invest in a good bread machine. They use less energy than the oven and they do most of the work for you. Also, look for a good cookbook. You can find a variety of recipes that you can try which will keep you from getting bored with the same old bread.

There's a thrifty principle: Wait and it will get cheaper.

When bread machines first came out, they were pricey. Now I often see them at yard sales for $5. Of course one always has to wonder if this one is in working condition. We bought one... bought a pile of stuff for $5, and this was in the pile. The control for lightness/darkness didn't work, so the bread came out too dark. Handy hubby bought a diode for like thirty cents, and now the machine works perfectly. We'll sometimes use the machine to bake bread to go with a soup dinner. I'm still not a huge fan of them... this is just one of several cheap-bread strategies I use.

We also bake our own bread. Once you get used to homemade, store-bought bread tastes like cotton balls. Also, adding milk instead of water makes your bread so much lighter and fluffier. Yum!
