Are One-Way Flights Cheaper Than Round Trips?

Submitted by: nsama16  04/30/2009 12:37 PM

With the prices of flying soaring through the roof, and airlines trying to squeeze every last penny out of you, I have recently found that searching for two one-way flights on separate airlines has been cheaper than booking a round trip flight through one airline. The last two trips i have booked I have done this (one to vegas, one to denver) and getting two one-way tickets has saved me about $80 to $100 each time. It also has the added advantage of giving you more flexibility in the times you are flying, since you are not limited to one airlines flight schedule.

My husband and I just did this. We have to go to Denver this summer and flights are really expensive right now. We found a "cheap" ($174) direct flight on the way there on Jet Blue, but the flights back were $274. so we checked with other airlines and found a $100 flight on American. So we saved $174 per ticket!

The only downside to purchasing one ways (I do it a lot for work) is that you tend to get pulled out of line for security checks because you appear more suspicious with a one way ticket.

Be prepared for Security scrutiny - my husband works for the US Forest Service and travels to and from Western fire details on one-way tickets-in his FS uniform, name tag, badge, with a government ID, etc. and Security will still track him from airport to airport -- one time there was a loudly announced "Here he is" when going through the Security gate.

They've also apparently upped the metal detector for him as the detector sounded on the zipper and snap on his pants (he ends up standing there half naked as he unzips, unsnaps, etc.) and even once it sounded on the staples in his pocket notebook.

I watch the Florida to Chicago flights. One day it is $274 up and $79 down for the same airline. The next day, it is the reverse. Since I have flexibility, I book going for $79 and wait for the price to change and get $79 going back.
