Save With a Wood Burning Stove

I use a cast iron wood burning stove as a primary source for heat in my home. After all firewood is free if you cut it and split it yourself (which I do, and I'm a single mom with three children), and we all love free. The cost to install a wood burning stove pays for itself in less than a year with the savings on oil and the use of free firewood. When managed correctly I can have a toasty warm home all winter long and never have to worry about loss of heat if the power goes out during winter storms, and that happens quite often in my neck of the woods. Its comforting to know we have heat and can cook on it too so we were quite comfy during our 3 day power outage.

I have a wood burning stove as well, however I live in 150 year old farmhouse and it is hard to get it to heat everything, the uptairs and down without using electric heaters, I wish I could figure out how to only use the stove because our electric bill is 400.00 a month aand I can't afford it however it has been in the 20s at night. HELP

I use an electric woodstove which keeps the house pretty toasty as well. I haven't had my heat on much at all so far this year.

We also use a wood burning stove and I love the heat it puts out, it keeps our house quite cozy, it is our only source of heat...we moved here about 8 months ago and purchased this little potbelly stove, the only downfall are the splinters I get in my fingers because I forget to use gloves! And the burns of course!! lol

Have you tried keeping the rooms shut off that you don't use? Maybe invest in another wood burning stove for the upstairs just to keep the chill out..we keep our bedroom doors shut because we like our bedrooms really cool with lots of covers. You could also put plastic on all your windows to keep a lot of the drafts out.

Hope this helps, we are on disability and can't afford huge bills either. Electric heaters use an extremely lot of energy and very dangerous if left unattended or knocked over by accident!

I was reading online to take a box(cut to the size window is)cover with cloth put in the inside window at night off when the sun is out.

I also over my inside door ways with blankets until I can make doorcovers. It keeps the room warm at least 3 degrees more.
