66 Modifications to Make Your Car More Fuel Efficient |
I came across a great article that listed 66 modificaitons you can make to your vehicle (car, SUV, etc.) to make it more fuel efficient. While I've seen a few of these posted here on TipHero already, there are many that haven't been (and many that I didn't know about).
The website ecomodder.com, which I've been to a few times before and which has other good info too, provides all 66 modifications. I've listed a few of the ones I didn't know about/some of my favorites (these are just my own headlines with brief commentary; they write a paragraph or two about each that gives you more info). Also, some of the ones they list are a bit silly, if you ask me, and also not something most people are likely to do. But there are 66 ideas, so there are still a lot of good ones.
- Fuel economy instrumentation - I think this is a fantastic idea. I've always believed that if you knew how much fuel you burned each time you drive, and thus how much money you were spending each time you drive, you would not drive as much, and when you did, you would be more efficient with driving (e.g., better planned routes, carpooling, etc.). I would like something like this for my home too, so that I could see how much energy I'm using, and again money I'm spending, leaving lights on, TV and DVD players plugged in, etc.
- Mudflaps - Removing mudflaps can make your car more fuel efficient by cutting down on wind resistance. Downside is a dirtier car, but I don't mind if it means saving money.
- Side mirror - Remove side mirrors (I'm only considering it for the passenger side, assuming it's legal). I also like the idea of mroe aerodynamic mirrors, but I'm probably not going to invest in that (feel like it would offset any gains I get from saving money on fuel).
- Front air dam - I have an SUV so the idea of a front air dam is interesting to me. The picture they provide makes the car look funny, but I don't care. Doesn't look too expensive either.
- Oil - They say that this decreases engine friction resistance, giving you with more miles to the gallon and more power. While I'll happily make the switch (or make sure this is what I'm using), I wonder what the side-effects are? Is it good for the car/engine long-term? Anyone know the answer to this?
The site has a handy little key at the bottom of each modificaiton blurb, which lets you see how easy/difficult it is to do, how fuel efficient it is, and how much money it will cost to do. Pretty helpful if you want to do a quick scan of the page.
