Save on Commuting Costs with a Four Day Work Week

Submitted by: anonymous  11/22/2008 12:40 PM

I would recommend to explore with your employer if it is possible to work four ten hour days instead of five eight hour days. In addition to getting an extra day off, your commuting expenses will be reduced by 20%, which can be a significant savings. My husband and I managed to negotiate the same day off so we can also carpool together on the remaining four days, an added bonus.

Good luck, we had that but a new manager couldn't manage to have meetings on one of the 4 days. So, they took the compressed schedule away from the people it worked for.

I agree, it can't hurt to ask, especially in this environment where the raises aren't coming and perhaps you are seeing a pay cut.

My husband asked this summer and got it started by mid-August. And since we are morning people, he works from 6:30am-5pm, no time taken away from the family, we have 2 small children.

He gets a ton more work done since no one else is there in the AM AND we do all the errands/cleaning on Friday and have the weekend to enjoy. It really is a stress reliever besides a money saver.

When I worked for the EPA in Washington DC, our entire office worked on an every other Friday off schedule, so half of us were there one Friday and the other half were there the next, so the office was never empty. I think a lot of government agencies did this as a way to curb traffic congestion as well. The bonus friday off was great! I miss it.
