I have a friend that had made 200% below the poverty line for years, had no idea of what she could get help wise. When she finally did check it out , she realized her kids were ellible for free meals at school (breakfast and lunch), that their material fees at school would be waived. plus they were ellible for free health insurance, medications as well as dental vision!
Thou there are ellible for foodstamps she does not utilize that because of this wonderful site and other sites that helps her budget her food money as well as the benefit of her kids free meals at school(breakfast and lunch)
And now due to all the great information she has just learned she is currently going to school, ..online at a fully accredited school for a job in the medical field as a billing/coder. (which is high in demand job and makes major money once your experienced and graduate college by the way ) all her costs are either paid for by grants, scholorships or subsidized loans which she will not owe a penny on until 6 months after the day she graduates!
Now for the first time she and her family actually has a future. she makes all A's and in three years(its a year round college) she will graduate with a bachelors degree with the option of taking other state/federal exams to get her full accredidation in her field of choice as well as other occupations within that field that she has studied for.
Now there will be people who say bad things about benefits or welfare.. they may call you lazy or even trash for accepting them, but if you are truly in need and struggling you should look into it.if it can make the difference between your future or lack of one ignore them and just do not tell them anything. It is no ones buisness but your own. There are lots of programs that have funding to help you,and if you don't utilize it someone else will! If you truly need it you should use it, ALso I would like unemployed disadvantaged teens and young adults to consider the benefits of job corps!
It is not the military, but it does pay your bus ticket to get there (and home on holidays), it does pay your cloths, food, hygene items and medical/dental/vision while your there. you can get a GED,1-2 trades, possibly go to college and your drivers license. and often you leave with money they set aside for you when you graduate(plus more a few months when you get home) I went there and it changed my life.
THou it is not without its problems, everything has its problems. There are endless oppportunities out there for you if only you seek to reach out for them.
The process of applying for benefits is challenging, there will be waits and obsticles to overcome(like lost mail and continued requests for more info) but stay the course, don't give up dont get discouraged...you will have a lot of paperwork, lots of phone calls to make and possibly tons of aggravation...but if you really need the help it is really worth the trouble.
IF you have to fill out paperwork, to see if you qualify for help, and you do...and all you have to do is submit honost info regurely , even if that info is a bit intruisive it is a small price to pay for a big bright future for you and your family!

We lived in Maine for a while which we sadly would refer to as a welfare state. Many folks moved from Maine and NH because the health insurance and other gov't benefits were so good. My only concern is that help like this leads to dependence. Not always but I've observed that this is the case much of the time. If there isn't anything that's required in return to "work for" or "pay back" those benefits people don't have the incentive to do anything.
