Flat Screen Deals at Costco

Submitted by: Phillip O  05/03/2008 5:35 PM

I like to purchase flat-screen TVs through Costco. I've found great deals, as you can pretty much get the same TV for less than what you would find in a Best Buy or Circuit City or equivalent. The way that Costco (and other large discount retailers like Costco) work is that they get TVs from the manufacturers that are very similar to what is being sold in stores like Best Buy, except there are a few small differences that make the TV different and, thus, allow Costco to offer a different, lower price. Usually, these differences in the TV are very small and minor and aren't big enough to warrant paying the higher price at Best Buy.

You should always do your homework to make sure you understand the differences between the TV in Costco and similar TVs elsewhere to ensure that you're not missing out on a "must have" feature. But overall, you can find great values from brands you know at the large discount retailers and save a lot of money.

And one note about Costco, I came across a New York Times article from a few years ago that talks about the company:

"At Costco, one of [CEO] Sinegal's cardinal rules is that no branded item can be marked up by more than 14 percent, and no private-label item by more than 15 percent. In contrast, supermarkets generally mark up merchandise by 25 percent, and department stores by 50 percent or more."

Also, the great thing about Costco is that if you have any problems with it, if you try it out and you don't like it, or whatever, within the first 90 days, you can return it!

I just had my printer ink cartridge refilled at Walgreens Photo Dept. Black ink was $10.00 with a $7.50 rebate. It was fast and worked great when I got it in my printer. It was a pleasure to find a store with such good service. Just thought others would like to know.
