Crafty Ways to Recycle Old Towels

Submitted by: Tip Hero  02/22/2012 11:30 AM

If you have old, perhaps fraying towels that you're still holding onto and not really using, give them new life with one or more of these great ideas found in TipNut's roundup!

  • Towel Mat for Dry Feet: use old towels and some extra fabric to make a cute mat fit for placing at the foot of your tub.

  • Poolside Robe: use a towel to make a cute, stylish cover up that's perfect for throwing over your suit at the beach or poolside.

  • Terry Cloth Caddy: make a caddy for the back of your bathroom door out of an older towel. Toss toiletries and such in the pouches and hang with a ribbon.

  • Spa Slippers: make your own cozy slippers out of an old bath towel and a tired old pair of flip flops.

  • Baby Bundles: use this towel roll to easily hold small objects for babies.

  • Unpaper Towels: this clever tutorial shows you how to make a reusable "paper towel roll" out of cut up pieces of an old towel.

I use older towels to make pouches for outdoor lounge chairs. I cut and sew them onto beach towels to hang off of the side and hold suntan lotion, phone, sunglasses, books, etc.

I use old cut-up towels in place of paper towels in most situations. However, I did not waste hours sewing them up all "cute 'n purty"--Nice idea if you have a ton of spare time. However, when I'm wiping up a nasty mess, my rags work just as well and for especially nasty messes can be tossed if needed.

If your towels are still in fairly good shape and just dingy looking or may have an undesirable smell, or frayed, but you don't want to just toss them, ask your local animal shelter if they can use them. I donated a bunch of towels that were discolored and frayed to our animal shelter. They use them for bedding, baths, and swaddling puppies and kittens and for cleaning around the shelter.

Back door (throw rug), let the dog stand on while your drying (w/other old towels), cleaning muddy paws. Saving cleaning up the kitchen/house from dirt/water being sprayed whereever in the house.

I use frayed old towels as a "dish rack" for the items I hand wash in the kitchen. Who wants to buy a dish rack and have to store and clean as well. The old towel gets used a few times, hung up to dry on the stove handle and into the weekly wash.

To be really frugal, air dry the towel once washed.

I use old towels by cutting them up and making them into dish rags for washing and drying dishes. I also take and cut them apart and make cleaning rags for the house and car. I will cut up larger towel pieces sew together and make quilts for TV watching.
